Micheal Jackson has died

At least MTV is doing a classy thing and started playing Michael Jackson videos almost immediately upon the news of his death. (Yes, they're ACTUALLY playing music videos!) Let''s face it, he made MTV.

Not on the west coast in which it was a tape delay.

I was coming out of the movie theater at around 7:00 EST, having seen The Hangover (funny movie, BTW) with my sister and a mutual friend. All of a sudden my sister tells me that she's received numerous text messages saying that Michael Jackson has died. My knee-jerk response was, "You're bullshitting me." We've all gotta go sometime, but I never expected that I would be hearing a eulogy for MJ this soon. "Surreal" doesn't begin to cover it.

What a sad day for the entertainment industry, the families and friends of Farrah Fawcett and of Michael Jackson, and the fans who loved them both so much. :(

I saw The Hangover earlier today (Like in the morning) and when I came home to hear the news about the two deaths, it felt like so long ago that I had actually gone to the movies. What a sad day today has been. He will be remembered, at least from me, as the person who brought great music and changed pop music forever.

People where I work were talking about it this afternoon. I had to find out myself if this was true. I was stunned.

He was an eccentric man with a bizarre lifestyle, but he was without a doubt one of the most iconic figures in modern pop culture.

Wierd thin is today on the way home from work I was wondering who would be next because of the old saying that Hollywood stars die in 3's. He had his issues but hell of an entertainer. Sad day.

Why do people keep saying this? They die in threes only because we count them in threes.:vulcan:

I was sitting with some friends outside a Dairy Queen when a local news team pulled up and simply announced, "Michael Jackson is dead." Long pause for stunned silence. "We would like to have some of your initial reactions." And that was how I found out.

Paraphrasing what one woman told the reporters: That was my childhood. He had a presence in so many good times from my youth. It's sad to realize he is really gone now. :(

I feel bad for what his loved ones are going through, but I'm kind of ambivalent about his passing. I liked some of his music, but I was never a huge fan.

As an aside, I find it really odd when people- complete strangers, from what I can see- publicly gather around to mourn a celebrity. I just don't get it. I guess it's odd to comment on a bulitin board as well, though, and that's what I just did.

I bet Farrah Fawcett's pissed

Farrah has nothing to worry about, she's gone to heaven, Micheal went to hell for touching little boys.
but you're on the right track, her death will be overshadowed by that of a child molester

Liked his old material, shocked that he is dead, amazed at how disgusting people are with their "celebrations" that he is dead.

Society makes me sick. You don't have to like him or his music but to act as if it's time to party because he is dead is disgusting.

The fact that he's dead isn't what makes me happy. Bad people, who do unforgivable things, who never get punished for them, who make a mockery of the criminal justice system due to their wealth and fame, who are finally gone and won't be able to hurt anyone anymore..well that makes me happy. This is probably the best thing that could have ever happened to his kids. If that makes me an asshole then I guess I'm an asshole.

I never believed that child-molesting crap, either.

I bet you think OJ didn't hack up his wife either.

you're the type that loves to be fed on media sensational bullshit and believes anything right?

It's not the media I believed. It was MJ himself who all but flat out admitted to this weird crap in a documentary.

If ya'll want to celebrate the life a great artist, that's cool. But trying to sugarcoat his obvious failings is hero-worship run amok.

People say it because it often happens.

What if Britney Spears died tomorrow (and I'm not saying she should)? It wouldn't be three anymore, would it? Unless you waited for two more celebrities/artists to die. (But even then, it would be six, not three.)

See, this is the kind of bullshit i'm talking about. If he admitted that he would be in jail.
What he said was that children have slept in his bed with him. Now I don't agree with that but it doesn't equal to what you're talking about, nor is it an admission of molesting. This is simply your opinion. Others would say he was a naive man surrounded by the wrong people who didn't tell him what he was doing looked wrong. He also put himself in positions where he could be taken advantage of. He lived in another world and was far too innocent of people around him.

This is probably the best thing that could have ever happened to his kids.
His kids have no father. Their mother is totally unknown to them. How is that good? Nobody knows who is going to raise them now.

If that makes me an asshole then I guess I'm an asshole.
Ok.

It's not sugarcoating failings. But I can say all you are doing is taking the worst that's being reported about him and stating it as fact. There is no proof what.so.ever. That is a fact.

Now you and a lot of other people think he is a bad person. But my belief in him lies in the comments from his closest friends and family who knew him best and have said he woud never do anything like that. But he did make mistakes. Just not the ones you and the media try to push on him.

And before this thread gets closed, remember the old joke? (It's sick when you think about it.)

What do Michael Jackson and McDonald's have in common?

Before the child molestation scandals, I always perceived him as this extremely talented and highly respected artist. But hearing about the scandals and allegations painted him in a totally different light. I don't think he was a classic pedophile that preyed on innocent children, but he was very immature and eccentric; he would've been very naive or stupid not to know right from wrong. I mean, really, even the act of sleeping with little kids not related to him in the same bed was rather questionable, and maybe he DID do a lot more than that, which would've contradicted his willingness to help disadvantaged children.

I can understand if that person is someone one grew up listening to and really liking. I think it's been quite touching how much of an influence Jackson's music has had on people and how he was able to entertain and bring out the fun in people.

Damn.. heard about it this morning on my drive to work.

No matter his personal life he still was one of the greatest as a performer and singer.

To this day his classic songs like Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat it, Smooth Criminal always elicit a dance (or at least half-dance) response from me.. we'll always have his songs even though he really took a dive in the last years both professionally and personally.
