Merch Beyond!

Yeah, I'm on DSL in the country, my connection is too borderline for gaming. Sometimes it's fast enough, sometimes it's not. That's why I can play rocket league, the games are short enough that if my ping gets too high I can try and fight through the last minute of the game and then quit.

Still, I don't think it would hurt them to do a Trek single player game. Look at the hype over No Man's Sky. Even if the final product is "meh" it shows a big market for an excellent space exploration game.

I want a new Bridge Commander/SFA/KA like game. Heck I'd settle for something like Starfleet Command

Also, while I believed that Paramout held an exclusive license to make movies which was granted by CBS, some of the documents coming out of the Axanar case around ownership point to Paramout owning the film rights outright, so while CBS could contract with whomever they like to make TV shows, they don't appear to have any control over theatrical rights. And as M'Sharak points out, perhaps it's academic anyway since both are owned by the same parent company.

Bad news for some of us. Moebius Models replied to a comment I made on Facebook which was hoping for prebuilt model kits of the Kelvin Timeline ships. Their response was that those kind of products weren't covered by their license.

This is where it gets a bit complicated, because while Paramount has copyright protection over all the movies they make and can control their distribution, the licensing rights to the Trek movies are another matter.

It's not complicated, it's simplified by having CBS Consumer Products oversee tie-in merchandise based on both the films and the TV shows. If not done this way, comics or novels with elements from both would have to pass by two vetting agencies. (That didn't work too well when both Viacom Consumer Products and Gene's Star Trek Office were both vetting manuscripts in the late 80s/early90s.)

All they'd have to be prepared to do is bid for the "prebuilt model kits" license, too. (EDITED FOR CLARITY.)

Hallmark is doing a USS Franklin ornament next year - and "Pop!" figures have come out for TOS, TNG and "Beyond".

That's as far as tie-in merchandise is concerned, but CBS Consumer Products doesn't control every aspect of the actual movies.

I'm not sure what other "licensing rights" you mean. Everything would be spelled out in the agreements between CBS, Paramount and Bad Robot. It's not like the 60s, where ownership of royalties and rights for the 1960s "Batman" TV series were confused by a lack of contractual foresight (across the decades) between DC Comics, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox and Greenway Productions.

What do you mean? They HAVE the license. They've announced that they're making kits of both configurations of the USS Enterprise, the USS Franklin, the USS Kelvin, and the Jellyfish.

In that case, they don't have the license for "those kind of products" (ie. prebuilt model kits) mentioned in your earlier post. Perhaps another company already has that particular license?

The conversation was between me and another poster about Paramount's side of the deal, their control of the distribution of the actual movies. We had already discussed the licensing rights belonging with CBS earlier.

So, any word on those cup toppers in the US yet?

For that matter, has anyone like Eaglemoss made minis of less canon ships, like the Cheyenne class, the Titan or the Aventine?

The Cheyenne class is being considered by Eaglemoss, as is the Titan. The Aventine and the Odyssey-class Enterprise-F are being petitioned for, but need at least 5,000 people basically promising to buy them before they'll get made. The Titan already hit that milestone.

They're both close!

I'm shocked that the Odyssey-class Enterprise-F is so close to its goal. I signed it back when the petition first started, but thought it would be such a long shot and didn't bother to check its progress. I'd definitely get the Aventine and the Titan too.

Of course, the other problem with DST is they only do one new ship every 5 or 6 years...or at least, it feels that way..

The late Thomas Sasser did a lot of work for them too IIRC

Wal Mart finally has the 09 Enterprise out on shelves-- 50th anniversary edition
