Matt Smith Reveals DW Departure Date

Matt Smith also said he was looking forward to being part of the 50th year specials in 2013 so I doubt he will regenerate in 2012.

He won't; since Series 7 is being split over 2012-2013. And if he meant a year from when they start shooting again he could do enough episodes to take him to the Anniversary.

I wish the BBC will clarify on how the next season will work + the 50th year plan. if the BBC thinks WHO will perform better in August-November (in terms of ratings) they could begin to move the show into that slot full time and have an 10 episode season 7 in 2012 followed by the X Mas special and 2x 1 hour episodes that celebrate 50 years over Easter 2013, which would end Smith's tenure.

August 2013 would then have the standard 13 season with the 12th Doctor and a possible new showrunner.

50th Anniversary is November 23, 2013, why would they want to have 2 Easter Specials to celebrate it 6 months+ ahead of time?

I'm not sure why everyone is so fixated on specials rather than a full season for 2013.

If they bank six episodes from season seven into the spring as is widely rumored, the BBC could have an American-style run of 20 episodes in 2013 with a full season eight. If 2013 is going to be "The Year of Doctor Who," there's no logic in scaling back and doing specials a la 2009.

Wouldn't be the first time - The 10th Anniversary story The Three Doctors started December 1972

But they'd be very silly to pass up 23/11/13. It's a Saturday.

It's the first mention I've heard of Specials, but then I avoid spoiler sections on Dr Who forums. I did think Moffat had said there would be more Who on TV than normal in the anniversary year.

It could mean next series last 7 weeks of 2012, first 7 of 2013, then the next series last 14 weeks of 2013.

That's my only wish for the 50th anniversary, that it airs on the same day as the first episode. I would assume that's a given, but who knows. Whatever it is, it should be a monumental event.

Have to say, if we do get the 12th Doctor after the anniversary then I really pity the sod, whoever they are. Bad enough they'll invariably be compared to their immediate predecessor, but if there's any kind of multi-Doctor story beforehand they're going to have to contend with people having just seen, Smith, Tennant and whoever else the Beeb can coerce (come on Eccleston must have a weakness we can exploit to blackmail him into doing it )

We don't KNOW that, although you are very obviously assuming it to be true, repeatedly.

Even if it were true, the 2nd half of season 7 should fall in early 2013, not the Fall. Not quite the anniversary.

As far as I know, there haven't been any official statements.

I don't get it either, but people like to make things more convoluted than necessary.

The lack of anything official is both worrying and heartening in equal measure. I mean the Beeb were quick to say something after it became apparent Eccleston was leaving. On the other hand if there is no truth to this you'd think a simple "There's no trut to this," would be in order...

Maybe because there's more interest in Doctor Who if people are wondering, than if we know he's staying on. vov

Well, if I read Smith's appearances on The Late, Late Show correctly, he picked up an American girlfriend while shooting in the U.S. Consequently, he's spending time on this side of the pond when he can.

Naturally, if the relationship keeps going, he's going to start thinking about trying his luck in Hollywood, probably sooner rather than later to be closer to his GF.

No doubt he'll keep whatever his contractual commitment may be for Doctor Who. However, I'd watch the GF. That'll tell you more about when he plans to go to the U.S. permanently than anything else.

Much as I dislike wishing anyone an unhappy love affair, if he's to stay beyond his current contract, that's what one would wish for.

Matt Smith's girlfriend is the English fashion model Daisy Lowe, though they did, ironically, meet in the US. They've been together for over a year, and they're currently living together.

They just happen to enjoy a jet-setting lifestyle, and they apparently think nothing of hopping a plane and flying to Los Angeles just because they can. :)

I stand corrected. I remember seeing him talk about having met a girl in the U.S. when he was being interviewed by Craig Ferguson. Being an American, I assumed it was an American girl.

If only I had the kind of dough where I could hop on a plane from Heathrow to LAX without batting an eyelash. Somebody needs to get me a gig on Doctor Who. I could be the first American Doctor ...

Dakota Smith

Worth remembering that when Smith first got the gig he was actually dating a Brazilian model who lived in Rio or somewhere similar!

I think these days a lot of actors do the whole jetset thing, though obviously you'd have to live in the UK/US whilst you were doing a job there it doesn't follow that you have to live there all the time.

From various appearances I've seen in the past few months (primarily on Craig Ferguson's show) he's made it clear that while he hopes to try his luck in Hollywood, that it'll have to wait until after his stint on "Who" is over, and that he has at least one more year to go.

When he says "one more year" in the VH-1/MTV interview, I just assumed it's because that's all the further that BBC has committed to, and that it isn't his place to imply anything else. Not only would it be presumptuous, but it's a sure bet that TBTB have warned him that the Top Brass at the Beeb tend to frown on the hired help implying that they've made a longer commitment to a project than they've actually contractually agreed to.

When asked point-blank if that means he's only willing to play the role for one more series, Smith has always been pretty clear that he'd be willing to stay on for quite a bit more; provided they keep making the show, and are willing to keep offering him the part.
