Matt Smith Reveals DW Departure Date

Hope it works out better for him than it did Tennant.

What do you mean? Are you referring to post-Doctor Who success? If so, Tennant has been extremely successful. He's been starring in an intensely popular production of Much Ado About Nothing in the West End - a fantastic production, by the way.

More post-Doctor Who american success, which Tennant has not ended up with an overabundance of so far. One can only wonder why, seeing his performance in the pilot of Rex Is Not Your Accent.

I think it only sounds wrong to us because we're used to hearing his English and Scottish accents.

An interviewer asks if Smith is going to be spending more time in America, and he says, "Well, I've got another season of Doctor Who, but after that, definitely."

Hope it works out better for him than it did Tennant.

Yes over in the U.K he's a god.

Over in the U.S.A his pilot "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer" never got picked up by NBC.

Then "Fright Night" practically bombed at the box office.

So let's see what Matt Smith can do in the U.S

Personally I think Tennant left at exactly the right time..

As for Smith, well we all knew he wasn't going to be around for ever, the debate now is over what a year constitutes. Given series 7 is going to be split over 2012/2013 this either implies a regeneration before the second half of the series (which given the nature of the production schedule seems unlikely) or that he'll be around for the anniversary but then regenerate.

I love Smith to bits, but three series is quite good in the modern age I think, especially when you're dealing with younger actors who still have their career ahead of them. It's all we got of Five after all and more than we got of many other Doctors.

Of course let's not loose sight of rule number 1 here...

The Doctor lies ;)

If Moffat and Co. pull off something memorable for the 50th Anniversary, then Smith would be a fool if he wasn't the "current" Doctor. He would be best staying put to be a part of that, then have his swansong be the 2013 Christmas special. That would also almost certainly take him past Tennant in terms of the number of episodes.

Sooooooo what are the chances of David Tennant and Martha Jones coming back when whatshisface leaves?!

Zero.

This is good news anyway, assuming he does mean one more series. 3 series is plenty, and I do love a good regeneration.

I reckon Tennant will play him again in something, just not as the regular Doctor on the TV show.

I believe they have brought back old Doctors for specials before, so it is not unprecedented.

We still have the human-Doctor clone and Rose locked away in another universe. They wouldn't even have to explain away Tennant's aging; the human Doctor is human.

I suspect it will go:

Series 7a Autumn 2012 followed by the Xmas Special 2012 with Series 7b in early 2013.

Then:

Series 8a Autumn 2013, finishing on the 23rd of November with the Regeneration. Xmas Special 2013 to introduce the new Doctor and Series 8b in early 2014.

(Someone with a good track record on GB has said that Moffat will leave too, to be replaced by Toby Whithouse.)

To be honest, I think three to four years/series is going to be the norm for most Doctors for however long this iteration of the show lasts. I'll be sad when Smith leaves (whenever it happens), but I'll also be looking forward to seeing what the next Doctor will be like.

Personally, it feels too soon to be discussing Smith's departure. Though really, I guess some people were already speculating on how much longer Tennant would be in the role when he had as much time in as Smith currently does.

Well, by this point in Tennant's tenure, "Last of the Time Lords" had aired and we were waiting for "Voyage of the Damned" to come out. I don't remember there being much speculation about when Tennant would leave, but I think that people were aware that he might leave after his third series.

Just some perspective: in the classic series, most of the actors playing the Doctor left after 3 years too. This is not unusual. It's been standard since the 60's. Only Pertwee and Tom Baker lasted longer. The other 5 originals: 3 years (or less.)

Now, of course, there were far more episodes per season in the 60's, so there are far more William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton hours of Doctor Who to watch...but still. Three years is very, very standard.

I can't read Smith's comment to VH1 in any other way than, "I'm doing one more year and then all bets are off as to what I do next."

I don't see that as being any different than where Tennant was back in early 2008, though, where he intended to leave with RTD and then had a wibble over staying when he sat down and talked with Moffat about the fifth season, as mentioned by RTD in The Writer's Tale. I guess the main difference is that Matt's opened the door on his own departure, while four years ago it was Tate who cracked open the door on Tennant's departure accidentally.

However, that VH1 clip is really at odds with other interviews, where Smith has talked about how he still has a ways to go to really establish himself as the Doctor along the lines of Baker and Tennant and how he's looking forward to the 50th-anniversary plans. One more year would put Smith's departure at the end of the next 14 episodes, which would presumably fall in early 2013. I find it difficult to imagine that he'd go to the brink of the 50th-anniversary and then pull up short.

But he does seem to have his heart set on Hollywood, and I can't say that I blame him.

Time will tell.
