Matt Smith Reveals DW Departure Date

Moffat confirms in the new DWM that when shooting finally does finally begin again next year it will be for the longest ever continuous production run.

Whether that's to allow Matt Smith to shoot enough episodes to take him to the Anniversary while still leaving after a year or not time will tell...
That doesn't really mean much; if they shoot a 13-episode season + Christmas 2012, but don't do a Doctor-light episode, you've got the longest block but still only have episodes airing through spring 2013, leaving Matt six months short.

Actually Series 4 and Christmas 2009 and the 2010 Specials were all shot as one continuous block so it has to be longer than that.

^ Wasn't there a big honking gap in the middle where David Tennant did Hamlet? They used they same numbers, but the production was by no means "continuous."

As Steve said, the 2010 specials were a separate production run, with time for Hamlet and production upgrades to HD beforehand. And possibly there was a break before Christmas 2009 as well - I'd need to pull out The Writer's Tale to be sure, but it certainly wasn't a part of the original plan.

Assuming Christmas 2009 is included, the 2009 series was be as long as my proposed run. In which case, make it two even blocks of 7 episodes. ;)

I don't know if I buy that Smith really wants to leave the role after just one more year as the Doctor. This is a dream role that he clearly enjoys the heck out of playing, and I can't imagine 3 years (which doesn't even equate to 2 seasons of episodes in the US) would be enough to satisfy that.

I'm sure he'd like to move on and try Hollywood at some point, but I doubt it'll be this early.

I would have said the same thing about Tennant.

"The Next Doctor" (Christmas 2009) was shot almost immediately following "Journey's End" so Tennant could start Hamlet. In the first edition of The Writer's Tale, RTD is still wrestling with the script for "TND" when "Journey's End" is filming, which also coincided with a serious bout of the flu.

Thing is, most TV shows in the UK usually only last two or three years, so it seems perfectly normal that an actor would get antsy about being on the same show for three years, even one they enjoy.

And besides, very few Doctors stay with the role longer than three years. The only ones who have are Pertwee (5 years), T. Baker (7 years) and Tennant (4 years). Of course, the argument could be made that Tennant only did three years, since his final year was just a handful of specials.

Also: Doctor Who is not Smith's "dream role." He enjoys it, but he's not David Tennant -- he didn't grow up a Who fan, and playing the Doctor isn't some sort of career apex to him. Many actors who enjoy success in a show for a few years want to move on after a while, to maintain their ability to play different roles, to maintain a reputation for acting versatility, and to generally just move on. Many actors like playing a variety of roles and want new challenges after a while.

Especially since, if Smith is careful, money will never be a problem for him again.

This all seems like a huge overreaction to just a random off-the-cuff remark. He was in the US at the time, he thinks its a cool place, and yes, what actor doesn't dream about being a huge Hollywood star?

I would love it if Smith lasted a long time. It would be an interesting change from the Doctors that only last for 1-3 years. Let's keep him around for at least 5!

^ I'd like to see him break Tom Baker's tenure as longest-serving Doc, especially given that he's so young.

Having said that, I was gutted when Eccleston left, but am really glad we got David Tennant, who in the end I preferred to Chris. I was also gutted when David left, but right from the moment Matt hit the screen, he's been brilliant and is now my favourite Doctor ever.

So in some ways, the rapid changeovers and short shelf-lives have worked out well. I just wonder for how long can they continue to get it so right - maybe there isn't a great replacement out there waiting to take over for Matt and we'll get another Colin Baker...

I'd like to see Smith outlast Moffat, because I'd like to see how another showrunner would write Smith. However, I think that either Moffat will outlast Smith or they'll leave at the same time.

I suggested this in the movie thread, and I'll suggest it here, too -- I'd really like to see Emma Watson as the Doctor. She'll probably still be too young to play the 12th, but a few years further down the road and she'd be the right age for the part of the 13th.

If nothing else, I at least want to see him stick around long enough to interact with other companions beyond just Amy and Rory. I love those two, but there's SO many other great dynamics that could be fun to explore with this character.

I mean, it would have been a shame if Tennant had left earlier and we lost out on seeing the Doctor and Donna together.
