Indeed. But that "unrefined" and "unskilled" notion is a bias from a faction within another ideological group, some among their number resenting the fact that in many cases, someone with great physical strength can overwhelm, with no amount of fighting skill or strategy able to counter that force.
Oh nos.

The fictional character can be defeated...the horror...?

IE, they're fine with women characters as long as they're dependent on men and are usually overshadowed by them?

That is true for the most part. Especially the overshadowed part. More flexible on the needing to be dependent on men but they have to at least see value or have some kind of respect for a male character. I would say Hicks or Trevor are men who Ripley and Wonder Women are dependent on. But they are male characters that are respected and even loved by Ripley and Wonder Women.

I would also say in a broader sense that like to see male and female characters in traditional gender norms and if the women character is outside of the traditional gender norms they need a a in universe excuse for it. Like Buffy and Women Woman have super powers. Ripley was in essence a truck driver but the crew was mostly male truck drivers and she was only one out two women on the ship. Plus being a mom was important elements to both the Ripley and Sarah Connor characters and Wonder Woman was in a romance with Trevor.

And it's assumptions like that, that lead to communication breakdown.

I agree these days it can be a issue. People take such literal takes on things more IMO than they use to. I feel people had a more nuanced and broader understand of getting the context of what someone was saying in the past. Might have something to do with only seeing words on text vs not hearing someones tone or body language.

Has everything to do with it. People envision tone, attitude, and meaning and without context that falls apart.

When 90% of human communication is non-verbal, you're only getting 10% in a text based medium.

I predict that show is going to be really, really good. To think that Star Trek could have him right now and not Disney.

Not only am I excited that he has joined the show (I've been a fan of his since The Riches), I'm happy we're finally seeing forward momentum with it.

...and I just remembered that Terry Matalas is the showrunner. Of course Stashwick was cast!

Beh, when he was running Picard the show became nothing but gutless fanservice. Too much pandering.

If the Borg show up I'm calling a timeout.

Possible. Remember their have been Trek/X-Men crossovers in the comics. Which means you could in theory connect the universes. Finally Stewart will get to play Picard and Xavier in the same episode!
