Major League Baseball 2009

ESPN has the worst baseball-related ideas. After the rainy WS last year they suggested a neutral site for the championship - don't even get me started on how awful this idea is. Now they're saying since all of the playoff races are boring this year they should let two more teams into the playoffs by adding another wild card spot to each league. This one is slightly less horrible, but are they serious???

The Yanks officially clinched. Phils are nearly there.

The Tigers are sure doing their best to make at least one division race kind of interesting. ;)

As for the ideas, they're pretty bad ideas. The system being used right now isn't broke, it just starts too late in the year. Just like tomalak said. And I'm not big on rewarding teams for mediocre play, and it wouldn't even make things much more "interesting.

The nice thing about baseball is normally you have to be really good just to get into the playoffs. Provided you don't play in the AL Central this year.

How about this idea. Not starting the season so late so we don't have the worry about games being played in November. I guess we can blame the WBC for that, but this schedule is so freaking long.

Did they start the season late this year? Maybe my memory's a bit foggy, but I don't recall there being any delay to the start of the season.

As far as increasing the number of wildcard teams- that's a shitty idea. The last thing I want to see is MLB become like the NBA. Besides, the additional playoff games since adding the wildcard is what's made the World Series go into November. Don't need it going any later than it already does.

Yep they are ;). And it's been a fun year so far to be a Tigers fan. Best year in a while for them. Back and forth games and stuff... but at least they don't have a bad record.

If memory serves, they started the second week in April because of the World Baseball Classic. Games will go into November this year. Anyone remember when the World Series ended before Halloween. Those were the days.

The Rockies better get their bullpen figured out. Franky Morales almost blew another one last night.

I almost had to go change my shorts after that one. The good news is Street had a nice outing, even though he only faced two hitters, so hopefully he's healed up. Looks like Cook will be back sometime this week too.

I thought I saw Cook would start Friday. Good to see Street throwing well.

I remember when there were day games in the World Series and Wrigley Field didn't have lights.

(I think that's me)

1. He leaves pitchers in and let them give up 8 runs an inning.
2. He will take starters out in the 7th when they have given up no runs and still are showing signs of going strong to put in someone from the bullpen who gave up 4+ runs the night before (and they usually do again).
3. He plays favorites *coughGregNortoncough*. If you're batting .098 you don't need to be in a pinch hitting situation.

I want another World Series... it's time for something to change. We have all the right pieces, they just need to be put into place. I don't have anything against Bobby personally... he just makes some odd decisions. I hope he goes out with a bang next year though.

Good win for the Tigers tonight. They are playing Cleveland, but a win is a win right now. Minnesota also won to stay just 2.5 games back. Detroit has a chance to push the lead to three full games tomorrow night.

Are you enjoying the race Peg? The Twins are on a serious tear right now, sweeping Chicago in Chicago. I feel worried about the Tigers chances. Minnesota seems to want it a little bit more.

The Braves are tied up with the Giants at four games back now. The Braves have the easiest schedule, so I hope they can pull this off.

I'm loving it. The Twins have been playing great lately. I'm a little worried about their upcoming series against Kansas City: The Royals have been hot and seem to be relishing their role as spoiler. I just hope the Twins don't look past them and think only of their upcoming series against Detroit.

Joe Nathan has been kind of scary lately. He still usually gets the save, but I liked it better when bringing him in was almost a gimmie win.

Now wait just a Geno's Steaks minute here...how exactly would that work, two wild cards? I mean, in the division series you've got the winners of east, central and west, plus wildcard. That's two games of two teams each. If there's another wildcard, that's an odd number of teams, so who plays who?

The only way it could work would be like the NFL, where the team with the best overall record gets a first-round bye.

God, ESPN is full of goddamned retards.

Yeah, byes won't work in baseball (they could do round robins, but they're just as retarded). Plus, we've had exciting playoff races other years. Just because they're not so good this year doesn't mean anything. ESPN can get their ratings up next year instead.
