Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No marketing

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film
Good. And I hope Simon Pegg totally lies about everything in the movie to the amateur and professional spoilers just to annoy them.

No marketing
Patience, Padawan.

I don't care, and I want to see nothing, not only before opening day, but also not until I see it for myself in the theater.

Spoilers are like frustrated voyeurism instead of real participation in intimacy with a living partner and a satisfying climax. When the voyeurs finally get to go inside, they're all spent.

The entitled need for immediate gratification these days is indeed alarming.

...BEY (yes, I'm calling it that!)
Ok, but don't be surprised when you are misunderstood and begin to receive offers of help from aphasia support groups. As a related question, why did you create a poll if your mind was already made up and unwilling to live by it?

I'm watching the film anyway, so I don't need any synopsis, spoilers or hints.

That's my attitude, too. I don't need to render judgment on the movie until I see it next summer.
Thirded!

I admit I enjoy the spluttering outrage of the self-appointed guardians of Trek.

Don't see how it relates to aphasia.
I didn't have a firm POV, but starting the thread made me think about the issues and choose a side. Being mocked for lack of conformity has not (yet) changed my mind.

Mocked?

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

E.g., JWPlatt's "aphasia" remark.

I dunno, based on the poll thread responses, the acronym word "bey" automatically prompts all sorts of hilarious associations that no-one outside the US is aware of.

Not sure if it was a mocking so much as the association with another term than what is intended.

Such as the term "root" in the U.S. vs. outside the U.S.

It always amazes me that a show about the future has a fanbase that's so stuck in the past.

It's 2015. Star Trek is an obscure, niche property that no one outside of this forum really cares about. There's not going to be any buzz.

Inasmuch as you had any point to make here, -Brett-, I think it can be now considered made, and you may safely retire.

But one more thing before you go. Things like this?
-Brett- said:

Don't post them.

Swipes at other fans and/or fan groups are completely unnecessary, they add nothing of any value to the discussion, and they may be considered trolling.

Just don't do that, 'K?

Funny. I'm not aware of any rule that says only "me too" responses were allowed here.
Nor am I, but - when some advice was given against baiting other fans - it is funny just how ready you were to pull out that "I've got a right to express an opinion" card, isn't it?

Still, if you'd only stopped right there... or, better yet, instead said something along the lines of "Right, sorry - I don't know what I was thinking. I will try harder in the future to avoid taking swipes at other fans, because I realize that's just not helpful."

But no - you didn't do that. You just had to go for "forum tough-guy defiance" and flip the virtual finger:
Thank you for your suggestion, but if posting on this forum again amuses me I think I'll do so despite your recommendation. K?
That's the part which will earn you a warning. Comments to PM, if you would.

What was the nonintended term?
Not sure. Maybe it was mocking. But, Bey also refers to a Turkish capital some where.

Or maybe I'm wrong.

And don't forget Turhan Bey who was a popular B-movie actor in the forties, appearing in such films as The Mummy's Tomb and The Mad Ghoul . . ..

And of course Karloff played "Ardath Bey" in The Mummy!

Every word might also refer to something else, e.g. "Gen" can mean information or knowledge, as in "to gen up" on a subject. "Nem" is a Vietnamese dish. "Tuc" is an abbreviation for the constellation of Tucana, whose brightest star is Alpha Tuc. It also stands for Trade Union Congress and Third Unitarian Church.

Sorry for spending so much time niggling at irrelevance... :)

Don't forget Karim Bey from From Russia with Love.

And all this inevitably leads us to:

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

I miss the days when I didn't even know movies were getting made until I saw a commercial on TV. The internet has spoiled us into thinking we need to be told every piece of information about every single project. It'll happen when it happens; relax.

I somewhat agree, the plethora of available information on upcoming films does have a tendency to ruin the element of surprise, those Sixth Sense moments that make filmgoing so enjoyable.

Granted, there were magazines like Starlog and Famous Monsters of Filmland that gave us some idea what was coming up.

"They're making a TV show based on PLANET OF THE APES? Cool!"

But, yeah, you didn't have an entire cottage industry devoted to spoiling moves years in advance.

Yep. Another problem with that cottage industry is so much of the "inside" information they reveal is completely fabricated, yet it is accepted as gospel by some fans.

Cottage? Cottage?! They abandoned the cottage a long, long time ago and moved to Beverly Hills, like an evil and cynical version of the Clampetts.

Oh god, yes.

Remember that whole tempest a year or so ago, when the entire internet was reacting to the "news" that Wonder Woman was going to be a Kryptonian in the new movie--and there was this huge explosion of "nerd rage" with the usual torches and pitchforks and threats of a boycott?

"Damn you, Warner Bros! You've ruined Wonder Woman!" Etc.

Never mind that that the whole thing could be traced back to a single speculative blog posted by a random fan with his own pet theory about how the new movie might handle Wonder Woman.

It wasn't even a "rumor" attributed to "reliable sources." It was one fan's wild guess that went from "theory" to "rumor" to "news" in less than a day.

It was insane--and far too typical.

I know what you mean...
Some peolpe always trust the most negativ & unreliable sources.
"I don't like this so it's true!"

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

The other day, I saw the trailer for 'The Revenant' at our showing for Crimson Peak.

I thought the trailer looked great - well shot, pretty tense, and not your ordinary trailer. All the hints you got about the plot were 'It's historical, this character seems to think his life is over, and he'll be trying to both survive and avenge something.'

The people I was with hated it because 'It didn't tell you anything about the story.' Now admittedly, one of these two people is a total arsehole who picks (loudly) on everything (in Crimson Peak he was actually complaining during the movie in a full theatre about how badly he thought it was directed), and he tends to browbeat others into just concurring to stop the argument.

Nonetheless, I thought it was interesting that it seemed like such a major point of contention for them. I thought that bare bones approach was a big point in the trailers favor.
