Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No marketing

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

I kind of guess, that it will be a movie about a bunch of people in space, in a ship named Enterprise. It will feature Special effects, explosions and lens flares. Like the previous 2 movies. Maybe, if we are lucky, there will even be a story!

Better to have no media buzz and a good film, than a media buzz and no good film - sorry, as Fantastic Four was mentioned before, I couldn't resist...

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

My apologies if any of the following has been covered, but here's my thoughts on the matter:

There's a couple of particular differences between the first Star Wars trailer coming out 13 months ahead of time and its inherent buzz, and what's going on with Star Trek Beyond. Remember, The Force Awakens is the first new SW film in a decade (or, for some fans, the first in 32 years), and they'd already finished principal photography by the time it came out, IIRC. The first point alone means all Star Wars fans, and even casual movie fans, would be clamoring for ANY bit of info they can get. Demand is at an all-time high for Star Wars publicity and info.

With Star Trek Beyond, it's only been 3 years since the last movie, and they're still deep in the middle of production. The larger audience (not us core Star Trek fans) isn't hungry enough yet to demand all the info possible. We're still getting plenty of bits out during production to maintain our interests, but the big publicity machine won't really get rolling until the film hits post-production.

You can't outright compare the two films in terms of publicity and buzz, it's a little more complex than that.

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

I understand the film is a fairly long way off and I'm not saying I need to know specific plot points, but I would have thought the film would have a bit more buzz around it at this point. As I said before, I hope Paramount gives this film + the 50th anniversary the attention they deserve.

By what standard will you judge the "attention" given to the 50th anniversary and the new film?

Is there a certain number of advertisements they need to make, a certain number of promotional products, a certain number of previews and new trailers?

Or will you be judging it by "feel"?

There's a lot more buzz around the Star Wars movie because...jesus, it's a Star Wars movie. It's a big deal to the movie industry and to moviegoers all over the world.

The Star Trek movie is just a movie. It matters a lot to the studio releasing it and to Star Trek fans.

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

And this is where I channel my inner curmudgeon and point out that back in the old days, before the internet, there wasn't this bizarre expectation that we were entitled to know all about a new movie a year before it comes out . . . .

I still haven't seen most of this past summer's movies yet. I'll worry about the new STAR TREK movie when it comes out next summer. :)

Also, the danger in hyping stuff too far in advance is that you run the risk of making people tired of hearing about it before the movie even comes out.

"You going to see the new STAR TREK movie next week?"

"Huh? That hasn't come out yet? Seriously, I thought it came and went months ago, I've been hearing about it for so long . . . ."

I remember being impressed getting two or three sentence snippets of coming Trek projects in Starlog or the monthly DC Trek titles back in the '80's.

The world sure has changed.

Can you please yell at us kids to get off your lawn because that would really set the mood? :techman:

Honestly, in this day and age of media buzz, a year feels like way to long to start promoting the film. Interest simply doesn't have that long of a shelf life.

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

Fake.

We all know there is no marketing due to the fact that there is no movie. Lin has just recast F&F due to Walker's death ;)

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

No script.
No budget.
No movie!

Also, BARCODE SCANNERS!!!

I'm sure there will be complaints that it looks like a Fast and Furious movie, as soon as the first teaser comes out.

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

Does Dennis know that he's paying for a Fast and Furious film?

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

I guess, but there is zero buzz about this film. This movie is very important for the franchise. I hope they pull out all the stops.

There's a lot of buzz here. I think studios have realised that a long lead-up of publicity can bore people. The better strategy is to slowly build buzz among the fans, so that when the general campaign starts, a month or two out from release, there will be underlying positive sentiment to support it.
Also, at this point I know about as much about STB as I do about TFA.

As for the Anniversary... Given a choice between an entire year of old Trek actors appearing on talk shows and specials (which not many people will watch), and a great new Star Trek movie, I definitely choose the second option.

I'm sure there will be complaints that it looks like a Fast and Furious movie, as soon as the first teaser comes out.

Which is bizarre considering how "normal" the FF movies look compared to JJ's flashy, superstylised Trek.

To some, the omaze videos too are a hint of how the characters interact. The lucky winners went on set and one of them even was part of a scene. Of course they can't say too much but the reports say that from what they saw the movie is good

I didn't know about this. I love the positivity of the blog (as opposed to this forum  ;) ). I liked the girls in matching T-shirts. And Doug Jung was on set, not locked in a cupboard somewhere!

You do realize, when Roddenberry pitched Star Trek to the networks, that it was an action adventure show? And that the movies are following in its footsteps?

Agreed. And the big problem with the initial pilot ("The Cage") was that it was considered "too cerebral". If that episode were allowed to air at the time, Trek would've had a smaller niche audience than it got with the second pilot. If Roddenberry had had his way, Trek wouldn't have survived through its first season.

Personally, I'm glad there's been little to no publicity so far. Hell, I'm doing my best to avoid publicity surrounding Star Wars Ep VII. I just want to go in and see the movies, publicity almost sight unseen.

Re: Less than a year away + we know nothing about this film/ No market

It always amazes me that a show about the future has a fanbase that's so stuck in the past.

It's 2015. Star Trek is an obscure, niche property that no one outside of this forum really cares about. There's not going to be any buzz.
