Kurtzman: 2 more live-action shows in the works

I think Pike is a lock. Academy seems like the safe bet for the second show but I am actually thinking we might be seeing the first Trek comedy. I think Tribble Short Trek might have been them testing the idea. I would love for them to bring Edward back to life somehow and make him the star of a show.

More shows means more IS IT CANNNNOOONNNNN posts

We look to be heading towards 40-50 episodes of trek a year?! Could anyone have imagined that 10 years ago? Back to the same quantity we had when DS9 was on, amazing stuff.

Even crazier to think that in the first 51 years of Trek's life, we got 5 shows (lets call it 6, to include TAS), and in the next five years we may have added up to 7 full series' to the list, plus whatever limited series they're working on. The way Kurtzman is talking, it might not even stop at 7, either.

Incredible.

I keep telling myself "they have said numerous times that they heard the fans loud and clear when it comes to wanting a Pike series so they really need to do this now if they don't want to face even more wrath" but then I also think "I wouldn't put it past CBS to throw out two series no one ever asked for and/or never even thought of".

One thing to keep in mind is that CBS may one to do something akin to the MCU with Trek. In order to do this, you have to set up a system where most of the series are actually cross-referential and build towards a bigger story. But Trek is in some ways limited when it comes to this because the stories take place in distinct timelines separated by enough distance that no human characters (and few alien characters) can really bridge them.

I just bring this up because it might make sense for them to do something else set around the time of Picard - presuming they want that to be the new "home base" for Trekverse.

I would love to see something anthologized and plot-oriented like a Star Trek version of Sliders, which was basically Star Trek: Parallel Earths.

As Short Treks shows us, the problem with a Trek anthology show is budgetary. Basically every time you want to show a new ship/era you might need new uniforms, new sets, new props, etc.

An interesting way to cut costs would be if they did an episodic show based around "redshirts" - Star Trek: Away Team. Basically every single week the episode started with being beamed down, which would really limit the need for any ship-based sets. You could have the characters of the week die without concern, which would add a lot more tension to the series as well.

I certainly hope so. Tired of rote Trek and nostalgia pandering. I love Pike (my favorite captain, next to Robau) and hope he gets a series, but that's contingent upon Mount deciding he wants to make that commitment.

I would like to see something completely new.

Since the mid-23rd century and the late 24th century look exactly alike, I don’t think budgetary concerns are all that big a problem for CBS if they did an anthology series.

The best way to do a anthology show is to do the "American Horror Story" approach and do a singe season with different characters and different story that can also be in different time periods. With Trek you could even do different universe's. Maybe you want to do a season were Klingons make first contact with earth in the year 1969 after seeing the moon landing for example.

An interesting idea - in fact Discovery's original idea - but it would still be kinda expensive.

IMHO if they're thinking of going this route they should probably look to what TOS did and see how they could reuse existing CBS standing sets - build entire episodes around them - in order to reduce production costs.

I foolishly cling to some hope they might do something set immediately after Archer's prequel 22nd Century Enterprise. There's still a rich seam of the Star Trek Universe they never got around to by the time 2005's cancellation happened... the Romulan War, the Birth of the Federation, Starfleet expanding to include Andorian, Tellarite, Vulcan crew members, M.A.C.O. evolving into Security. Briefly touched on with Idris Elba's Edison being with the military but made Captain of the U.S.S. Franklin in Star Trek Beyond.

It's a question of finding a different setting to all the other iterations. Perhaps make it an Earth-based, political series with occasional glimpses of character backstory prior and ongoing expansion into the Alpha Quadrant setting up starbases and strained alliances with different governments. Bakula starting out with good intentions as Federation President Archer but having his utopian ideology worn down... and then it seeds Section 31, Picard and Discovery's exploration of the organisation going more and more off the rails, until it apparently collapses in the far future.

I think that would be great but I feel like another prequel will only set Trek fans screaming bloody murder.

Who am I kidding, though? They will anyway. :D

That's literally what Discovery's initial premise was, but CBS backed out, as it would cost them too much.

Any show concept needs to reflect its budgetary limitations. The right sets are the sets that can be reused.
