Jayru (JSnaith's) 3D Trek

I really like that! I was never keen on the open cargo bay on the Excelsior model, even if you couldn't really see it properly, your version ismuch better!

Looking great. :mallory::techman:
Thank you!

It never sat well with me either, hence the change. The original is so wasteful of space, I think what I have done makes better use of the entire space. - allows for better connectivity within the hull. I will be doing a simple cutaway to explore how this iteration of the Excelsior Class is different.

More soon :-)

Last update before the New Year starts.

Most of the ship is done, just some details to finish off and some rooms to add behind the windows on the secondary hull. She's about 97% done otherwise -

Happy New Year to you all!

Almost done, some minor things to finish on the mesh proper, and then need to add the self lighting rig, but here's today's offering -

I guess you could call this a "95% Excelsior" - but to me, it proves that you can make a ship following the lines of the original at the scale (467m) that the studio set. The Connie and Shuttle are at the correct scale.

I actually like the idea that the Excelsior Class is not a behemoth. I think the way it was shot in later movies was to give the impression of a much larger ship - but she's not. She is what she is - the new late 23rd Century Heavy Cruiser.

Anyway, comments and the like welcome. More soon!

This has the biggest change to the design, a proper shuttle bay

Thank you so much for that. The original almost looked like a clamp for a dropship or a Gundam or something.

I have often wondered if a secondary hull might take an attachment—like the head on the ALIEN…that would flow back and come to a point just below the tip of the secondary hull proper…a special package…

My understanding - which is informed by conversations with aridas and Guenther - is that the undercut on the secondary hull serves a purpose when it comes to the warp field, so it has to be kept clear. It is rather pronounced on the Excelsior and yes, maybe something else could be attached to it? But that would change so much of the design, blocking off the secondary shuttle bay and cargo bay access. Hummmmmmmm....

I think given I have a basic cutaway in mind and what I know based on that of the internal layout, the class is well served with cargo and shuttle space. Main Engineering is on Deck 13 (It has to be), so a lot of the secondary hull is given over to storage and the like.

Food for thought.

It would have to travel much slower with a pod yes…Ingram would not have this capability.
I think any ship with such an undercut would have the "ability" - but would it make sense with the design and the way the ship worked? I made this mistake on the original McCaffrey Class ship I built. I rectified it when I recreated it.

But, that's not to say it couldn't be done, but it would have implications :-)

Aside from the self-lighting rig, the mesh is now done. Orthos -

I am very happy how this turned out. Yes, I have "tweaked" the design a little with some logical changes (I think), such as the cargo bay access and the phaser layout (there are now aft phasers), but this still remains an Excelsior.

The USS Horizon (Oldfield Class) my version of what the Excelsior should/could have been, USS Galadin (Excelsior Class) my 95% Excelsior and the USS Odysseus (Ingram Class) based on Todd Guenther's design -

Beauty shots of the USS Galadin coming in the next day or two after I get her lighting rig sorted - comments and the like welcome, more soon!

That looks very close to the size I portrayed it as having back in the 80s. It looked huge to me at that size. No size of any ship ever seemed big enough to fans- it was the experience of seeing this thing get inflated over the years that made me suspicious of people wanting the TOS ship bigger. I think it is more a failure of imagination and inability to see just how huge these things would be, and how little they need to have to do what they are shown doing.

In any event, good work making that old pig presentable. They needed you back on the Generations team to come up with the “new Excelsior-ish Enterprise”.

Hiya aridas!

I stuck to the 467meter length that the studio says she has, but found that you can only get 24 decks on her, not the 30 odd that some people state. The Excelsior is not a big ship - and it makes better sense to me now, having built one, that it was a little bigger than the Constitution which this was supposed to follow on from. This was the new heavy cruiser platform, emphasis on cruiser. Not a new behemoth. When you look at the class in that light it begins to make better sense. Yes, Heavy Cruisers got larger over time - but there wasn't a sudden jump in size. That would make no sense with Starfleet needing these ships to be able to use existing facilities.

Given that the original Excelsior was a testbed for new technologies, she would still have to be able to make use of existing stuff like current torpedo sizes, docking ports and shuttle facilities - it was one ship - the so called "Great Experiment". It can't have all been so different that the ship was unable to make use of any other existing technologies, if the design is successful - then yes, You work newer tech in over time. So I think the changes I made were reasonable in that they work with what we know Starfleet had during that time period.

Back in the early 90's? I was... well, younger and not so experienced with design. But yes, I would never have put those extra impulse engines on the hull. Why, why, did the ship need them? They made no sense design wise. They should have just repainted the ship and put the Enterprise name on her. Instead they butchered the studio model to the point where they couldn't revert the changes. But thank you for the compliment my friend. Thank you. I can certainly say the same of you and Todd :-)
