James Cameron's Avatar: Discuss/Countdown

What is James Cameron's screen name on TrekBBS? Then I'll be able to comment on his avatar.

Jayson.

I haven't seen anything about the movie, and not seen any hype.

My brother in law is in it so I'm keen to spot him on the big screen.

I have my ticket for Friday. And because Australia is ahead of most of the rest of the world in timezones, I'll get to see it before all of you in North America and Europe. :)

I'll post my reaction here after I get back on Friday night.

And I'll see it before you. :)

Dang it. OK, that's it. I'm moving to Kiribati.

EDIT: Btw, I heard that the 2 minute trailer is now scheduled for release on the web on Thursday morning at 9AM US Eastern time, which is a day earlier than previously advertised.

It is a particular website exclusive before it goes viral? Which one?

Seeing as how it looks like in North America, the only places they'll be doing Avatar Day is at IMAX's with 3D capabilities.... I definitely won't be seeing it.

Oh well. Maybe 15min is a bit too much for me, spoiler-ish wise. I'll have to stick with whatever trailer they finally release.

I thought Michelle Rodriguez was the best thing in Resident Evil, so it's good to see her in something big like this.

Does anyone have a link to trailer B in HD yet?

Here are some recent updates if you haven't seen them.

more promo images from the film and set, including the lovely, minimally-clothed Neytiri riding her Banshee:

A little over a month to go. I'm still really looking forward to it.

The more I see of footage, the happier I am that it doesn't appear to be shot for 3-D. There doesn't seem to be any gimmicky 3-D shots. It seems to have been shot just like any other James Cameron movie. I'm looking forward to seeing it in 3-D and 2-D, and comparing the experiences.

Anyone plan on opening night?

I never heard of it before tonight but just saw a trailer on FX during Sons Of Anarchy.I guess I found my next must see movie. :techman:

I don't think the 3d is used in a gimmicky way, but "it doesn't appear to be shot for 3d" doesn't seem quite right either. What I'd say is that, in other movies that I've seen in 3d, the 3d is used as a gimmick, where the movie is pretty much the same as 2d, but with the 3d aspect being used for certain things to occasionally "pop out" of the screen at the audience. In Avatar, in contrast, every scene has beautiful 3d depth, and it feels like a true 3d environment.

It's so different from a traditional 2d viewing experience, that I'd actually say that it's kind of distracting, at least in the 15 min. that I've seen. Maybe when I see the whole movie, I'll be able to adjust, and appreciate it more, without my brain suffering from sensory overload.

So-called 3D (more properly termed stereoscopy) gives me a stonking headache -- 2D for me anyday. I don't need to see smurfs on steroids popping out of the screen.

South Park did a pretty hilarious reference to this movie in this week's episode. They called it "Dances With Smurfs".

I saw some movie, I think Harry Potter, with 11 minutes in 3D. While it looked pretty cool, I was so glad to get those glasses off my face after the 11 minutes were done. I do not want to wear those big plastic things on my face for two hours. fuck no.
