Is there a way to try and "learn to love" Nemesis?

I do appreciate that the problems are not with the actors.

Really? Patrick Stewart's hammy performance in this film means it is definitely not Kosher. His scene with Kate Mulgrew in particular is excruciating.

On the upside, Stewart's performance lends unintended irony to the line: "A little less florid Data."

Well I like that Riker finally gets his own ship. There are a few other small moments that are enjoyable. You just have to wade through so much bad stuff to get to the (very) few good parts.

Well, I'd qualify that a bit. I don't think the problems are with the acting. But two of the actors -- Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner -- and their insistence on exercising creative control over the story and pulling the characters in directions inappropriate for those characters, was definitely a big part of the problem not just with Nemesis but all of the TNG movies, save for perhaps Generations.

Donatra is fun to look at....she's the only reason why i still watch it...otherwise it sucked....

[i watched it one time with my 14 month old nephew, he blew a kiss at the TV when he saw her :-D ]

Really? I may be too forgiving, but I've never had a problem with Patrick's performance. If anything, it seems in keeping with Picard's age and how he's entering a new "empty nest" stage of life and having a bit of a midlife crisis. Instead of a red Corvette, he was riding around on the Argo buggy.

I think Stewart and Spiner were really off in Nemesis. They both chew the scenery in Nemesis. I somewhat expect that from Brent Spiner, but not from Patrick Stewart.

I like "Nemesis". There's lots to like. I get the feeling a lot of people are bandwagon-jumping in their bizarre hatred. Sure, it's not the best, but the vitriol (and the assumption that everyone simply must hate Nemesis) on display around these parts is ridiculous.

Was always the same with Star Trek V too. Well, guess what - I like both films! There, I said it! They're OK.

I don't know. That seems a bit presumptuous on your end to suggest that people have to be simply following the crowd in order to dislike Nemesis or that to dislike it is somehow bizarre.

For the record, I am a fan of both TMP and TFF, so I know something about going against the grain of Trek fandom. :)

However, I have to say that I do strongly dislike Nemesis and find very little redeeming about it. There are a few moments that I like -- I find the prepping for battle sequence backed by Goldsmith's great music to be enjoyable, and I actually like the sequence of Picard and Data escaping from the Scimitar in the scorpion craft. And that's... about it.

The story is very weak to begin with, it's badly directed, the characters are way off, it eschews anything even remotely resembling depth and character moments in favor of mindless action, the potentially moving sacrifice of Data is undercut by the absurd B4 subplot, and even the big battle sequences -- which even most Nemesis detractors seem to like -- just fall flat for me and seem 'off.'

So, no, I don't like Nemesis. But, no, I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon. I've got my very strongly felt reasons for disliking it, as indicated here.

I just realized, there actually is a way to learn to love Nemesis.

You will realize that you finally love Nemesis at some point between seeing five lights and learning to love Big Brother.

The whole movie just feels 'off.' There are lots of little things that make me go 'ugggh' but they combine with more subconscious things - pacing, direction, editing - to make it not feel very 'Trek' to me at all. Even the production quality feels cheaper, somehow. It feels bad. Like, 'Andromeda' bad. :shifty:

^ I agree. I still can't put my finger on what it is that bugs me about the effects sequences, for example. Perhaps they just seem too flashy to be Trek. The sound effects don't mesh either. Like the dull thud sound when a torpedo hits. I don't believe we've ever heard that before.

Well, since I don't have a clue how on earth I could ever bring myself to like, let alone love this movie, I doubt I could do it for somebody else.

Shinzon does't look like Picard: young or old Picard (a HUGE WTF moment, turning the film into unintentional camp). Data dies to squeeze tears from the audience that never come. How about the great moment of Shinzon pulling his body through the spear? That gave my kids nightmares for weeks. Just lovely. B-4 acting like a two year old is bad, but worst of all is a director who knows nothing about Trek.

Riker and Troi getting married rocks, but you can flush the rest.

Didn't they rip Shinzon pulling himself along that girder thing from another film?

And I still don't see why B-4 couldn't have been a mind-wiped Lore...
