I don't know how I feel about Torchwood

Hyperdrive was a shit British SF 'comedy' starring Nick Frost (the fat one out of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead). it was total bollocks.

Crime Traveller was a late 1990s British SF drama about a cop and a woman who's dad invented a time-machine that only let you go back in time and you always had to get back to the machine at the point when you left in order to go on with life. it was complete and total bollocks.

clearly you've never seen Hyperdrive or Crime Traveller.

Heard of them but no I haven't seen them.

Or Andromeda

Nah Torchwood series 1 is worse then Andromeda.
It in no way is as bad as Andromeda got. In fact I'm sure there are plenty of worse shows. It certainly had its fair share of problems but it was no where near being one of the worst shows ever.

Okay I'll put it this way.

Torchwood series 1 is worse then Seven Days, Robin Hood series 1, Codename: Eternity, War of the Worlds season 2.

It is by far the worst sci-fi season I've seen.

I like the first two seasons of Torchwood. They're flawed, but they do some interesting things, and they get some things right, and there are some really good individual episodes. As spinoffs of favourite shows go, I find it a lot more enjoyable than Voyager or Enterprise.

Children of Earth, on the other hand, is simply magnificent, some of the best stuff to come out of the new Who era. It is a completely different show in almost every respect, and it's worth a shot regardless what you may think of previous Torchwood.

Is everybody bisexual? I'm not sure that's normal...

Didn't Kinsey used to believe that everybody was 'really' bi?

Is it worse than Earth: Final Conflict season 5? :D

I have never seen any DW episode past the McGann TV-movie. So the answer to your question would probably be "no."

You've missed out on some great television, not to mention the Hugo Award-winning "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances" two parter which explains why Captain Jack is the way he is.

Have you just refused to watch it, or are you in a part of the world where neither the show nor the DVDs have been available?

Oh no, they're available all right. It's just that neither nuWho nor Torchwood seemed like my kind of show. The only Doctor whose stories I really enjoyed watching was the third, anyway (and "Deadly Assassin" from the fourth). If nuWho had an older Doctor, I might consider watching it...I guess I just don't much care for this young, hip, edgy, sexy stuff. No offense. ;)

(and no, I'm not an old geezer or anything like that, I'm only 39  . I just have very conservative, some might say excessively prudish, tastes. )

Well, I'm 51, and think DW is pretty damn good, and TW s3 (Children of Earth) is probably some of the best TVSF ever made. Or to put it another way, lighten up, dude, and open your mind. SF is always about the possibilities, and that should include political, social, and sexual possibilities.

Hell, as one poster here alludes in his sig, Harlan Ellison thinks DW is the best SF sholw ever, and willing to fight for it.

And, I probably shouldn't say it, but I'm straight, and if John Barrowman was to chat me up, I'd find it pretty damn hard to say no. :)

I get that a lot. I don't see what's the big deal about it. I know what I like, and it just happens to fall within a rather narrow range. The closest I ever get to "opening my mind" is rooting for both the Yankees and the Mets. :D

 Speaking of Kinsey... ;)

But how can you know unless you actually try it?

^ Ever seen Tommy Boy? Chris Farley said it best...

I can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take a butcher's word for it.

To put it another way. I know I'll get sick if I eat curry (even though I've never eaten it before), 'cuz I hate spicy food. So why bother? ;)

Because you don't know, you have the preconception that you will. You may have eaten spicy food before that gives you the experience to say you don't like spicy food, but what harm is there in trying to watch a TV show, at worst you lose 10 minutes before you go "I knew it" and at best you have a new favourite show.

Oh, you mean the TV show. Right. I thought you were talking about the other thing...oh never mind.

Anyway, the ALCS is on *and* I have to work, so I don't have time to watch a lot of other TV right now. :p

"The other thing..."? Fancying a shag from John Barrowman? Well there's a difference in that you know if you're attracted to someone.

^ And I know I'm not into guys, I don't have to try it first....

It's like bungee jumping. I know I'm scared of heights, so why would I have to prove it by conducting a possibly life threatening activity? :p

That was kinda my point, you know you aren't attracted to men from experience, but you can't possibly know you don't like a TV show having not seen it.

Yeah, that's the strange combination that's Torchwood. For all it's "let's have some fun, don't take anything too serious and who cares for consistency anyway" attitude, it has many touching moments.

Bingo.

I can't stand shows like that. I like it when a show (or film) takes itself SERIOUSLY. If it doesn't, it's not for me.

It's why I like Star Trek but not Firefly; Law & Order but not Bones; the original BSG, not the remake; etc.
