Giving Kelvin another chance

ID is certainly the weakest of the three, not for KHAAAAAN!!! but the fact a lot of it is a retread of ST09: Kirk has to take command, there's a space jump, the Enterprise randomly starts falling and they have to eject/restart the warp core, and the ending where they set off on a 5YM (again?) is practically identical.

And both have scenes of Scotty translating technobabble into crazy metaphors. There’s definitely a formula they tried to replicate.

And yet both work quite well. I love each for completely different moments and character development. I don't see it as formulaic, more as an extension of the larger themes of ST 09.

I recently rewatched STID after having absolutely despised it in the theater (on IMAX) but the story holds up much better than I remembered. I think my main problem with the Kelvin verse was that it tried so hard to make a connection to the prime universe and had Nimoy in the first two films. If they had just gone for the hard reboot like BSG did, it would have been much more palatable for me. Having really enjoyed Beyond, I now find myself wishing that we could have more regular Kelvinverse movies than we are getting.

Nimoy appearing is my least favorite aspect. The kind of pandering fan service these movies didn’t honestly need. Also agree this should have been a hard reboot. The alternate reality angle felt like a way to appease canon police fandom “it’s okay nerds, your original timeline isn’t erased!!! PLEASE don’t hate us!”

Except, they still hate them.

In my experience hate towards films has no expiration date-see Star Wars PT. But, it is nice to see them receiving more willingness to rewatch them.
Oh, they'll whinge forever (Although I must ask, what happened to the fans who loathed Next Gen so passionately in 1987?), my point was that ultimately they achieved nothing.

And yet I felt that the alternate timeline was the best aspect of ST09. I thought it was very neat, and most importantly, very trek.

Yes. As long as it's approached as a handwave and not examined too closely, it's the perfect way to reboot the Trek universe to tell the kind of stories they wanted, mixing old and new concepts.

That said, Trek is long overdue a totally fresh reboot without any continuity baggage whatsoever.

I think Javier Bardem would have been a good choice for the role too.
Yes replace the Anglo white actor with a Hispanic white actor. ...brilliant. They should have renamed him Joaquin.

I watched ST09 twice in the cinema 10 years ago. I was very excited Star Trek was back on the big screen, I thought Kirk promoted to captain was daft but so are parts of TWOK.
STID well was the funniest Trek movie to be on the screen. I rolled my eyes at the magic blood, another White Khan was an insult to suspension of disbelief and that Spock scene suited a Carry on film.
BEYOND well Jaylah made it worthwhile but if it's that easy to be an Admiral in Starfleet Harry Mudd should sign up.

"Carry On Into Darkness" and "Carry On Beyond" have got a certain ring to them... :D
