It still hinged on fans liking DIS S2 to gather support. It was not a sure thing.
Not really. This was the start of CBSAA’s plan to have multiple Trek series running continuously all year, in order to both cater to different aspects of the fandom, and to keep interest in Trek constant for the total viewership. It had little to do with whether fans liked DSC, because that was only 1/5 of their viewing revenue. Also by then TPTB were ready to ditch DSC's original premise and whoosh them off to the 32nd century, thereby making it a completely different show, and being essentially ignored by SNW (other than callbacks to the Klingon war.)
