News Exclusive: Scott Bakula Eyeing Star Trek Return In President Archer Series Pitch From ‘Enterprise’ Producer

It still hinged on fans liking DIS S2 to gather support. It was not a sure thing.

Not really. This was the start of CBSAA’s plan to have multiple Trek series running continuously all year, in order to both cater to different aspects of the fandom, and to keep interest in Trek constant for the total viewership. It had little to do with whether fans liked DSC, because that was only 1/5 of their viewing revenue. Also by then TPTB were ready to ditch DSC's original premise and whoosh them off to the 32nd century, thereby making it a completely different show, and being essentially ignored by SNW (other than callbacks to the Klingon war.)

Just throwing out a contrarian statement based on nothing more than opinion, in opposition to someone else’s (more clearly defined) opinion, does not a viable argument make.

And please don’t say, “yes it does”.

I think "Under the Cloak of War" is more than a callback.

Doesn't the plot of "Strange New Worlds" hinge on the events of "Such Sweet Sorrow"?

I don’t know. I don’t remember much about DSC because it wasn’t my favorite show. All I do remember was the push to make everything about Discovery ‘classified’ and ‘we don’t talk about this’ rigmarole to adhere to the holy canon.

Discovery's DNA is very strong in Strange New Worlds. Clearly it is not essential viewing for SNW's plots to make sense (to the show's credit, someone should be able to watch a spinoff in isolation) but there are several episodes where context is added with the knowledge.

I got the impression that the producers of SNW were trying to move farther away from DSC and more toward TOS because of the perceived notion that DSC failed as an actual prequel to TOS.

Chronologically speaking they would have to move from DSC toward TOS. Alas none of us can say what the cogs whirring in the powers that be are actually thinking.
