DS9 Versus Becker

I didn't choose Becker out of the Blue. It's the show that Dax went to when she left Deep Space 9 at the end of Season 6.

I know Terry Farrell's next project was Becker starring Ted Danson on CBS, but I'm curious if you'd watched the series and what were your thoughts?

I've seen Becker, most of the episodes, I suspect. I didn't see it when the show initially aired, as I am was not a fan of Cheers and I particularly did not like the character that Ted Danson played on Cheers, Sam Malone. However, my husband liked Becker a lot and one day, I happened to catch an episode with him.

I caught it later on, I was barely born when the show originally aired, but I thought it was good. My dad loved the show, but I thought Farrell's role was a departure from Dax and it was a little to get used to and did. Was Becker better? They're different genre's and thought both were equally entertaining.

I liked Becker. It was amusing sometimes. Danson's portrayal of aa cranky but caring doctor was surprising good. The scenes of a NY neighborhood were interesting.

  • If you were Terry Farrell, would you have left DS9 for Becker?
Great question. Yes. DS9 kept expanding their supporting characters and with her decline of being the science person and being more of a wife and comedic nuisance to Sisko it was time for her to leave, but I wish she wasn't killed the way it was done.

Berman was neither willing to pay her more, give her a flexible schedule, or cut back her appearances. There is also the suggestion that Berman was misogynistic during the negotiations . So she decided to leave.

What were her reasons? Tired of kissing Worf? Tired of Sisco calling her Old Man?
She had difficulties memorizing the heavy science dialogue and trying to incorporate the characteristics of person who'd lived multiple life times including being the mentor to Sisko. IMO I thought her insecurities were unfounded; in the first 3 seasons I never thought or doubted her performance and I enjoyed her chemistry with Avery Brooks, it felt natural in my eyes. I hated her with Worf and I never thought they had any screen chemistry.

But . . . DS9 was a superior work and I would rather be Dax than an insecure owner of a NY diner.
If I was an actor, I would like to continue my field in exploring new characters as a challenge so would be employers could see I'm capable to tackle a variety of roles. When my dad exposed me to Avery Brooks' previous work from Spenser: For Hire and A Man Called Hawk, I was jaw droppingly horrified and numb of what I saw. Don't get me wrong the role was brilliant but it was such a departure from the man I literally loved and looked up to. That Hawk... was intimidatingly mythical in the environment of organized crime.

I would agree with you, Stephon. If she had insecurities, they were unfounded. She was great in the role, and she and Avery Brooks had a great natural friendship going on. As for Worf. that was a mistake. They didn't go well together. I actually thought that he had the most chemistry with Diana Troy. As for Dax, I don't know. She did well in the friendships with Sisco, Quark, Kira, but as for romance, I'm not sure who I would have chosen for her.

Kate, for me, it would've been Sisko, the series already geared Jadzia as Jake's foster mother and I thought she was very comfortable with Sisko. This resonates with "Facets" as Curzon hid his love for her while Jadzia was doing the same thing with Sisko "Fascinations" , but Ira had other plans. I thought Cassidy Yates after making her a criminal was a slap in the face to a great character like Sisko; I'd rather Jadzia.

Whether or not Dax was the better role for her, Terry Farrell was really an crossroads in her career. After appearing on the cover of TV Guide, she was getting auditions for guest spots and such, but she could not commit to doing the filming. DS9 was going to end the next season--no one disputed this. When she decided to leave--after all the drama with Berman--she had to go out on auditions. She didn't have Becker yet. She did not earn that role until after filming on the Season 6 finale wrapped. It sucks not having Jadzia for season 6, and Terry Farrell has expressed regret for how things went down, but arguably she had to strike while the irons were hot.

I didn't like Cassidy with Sisko, either, but Jadzia was too young for him, I think. As for Jake, in the end, it was Kira with Jake, and that final scene was breathtaking!
