Which was the better show?
For Becker? Perhaps not. However, Farrell did not want to remain for many reasons. No reason for her to stay.
- If you were Terry Farrell, would you have left DS9 for Becker?
I caught it later on, I was barely born when the show originally aired, but I thought it was good. My dad loved the show, but I thought Farrell's role was a departure from Dax and it was a little to get used to and did. Was Becker better? They're different genre's and thought both were equally entertaining.I've seen Becker, most of the episodes, I suspect. I didn't see it when the show initially aired, as I am was not a fan of Cheers and I particularly did not like the character that Ted Danson played on Cheers, Sam Malone. However, my husband liked Becker a lot and one day, I happened to catch an episode with him.
Great question. Yes. DS9 kept expanding their supporting characters and with her decline of being the science person and being more of a wife and comedic nuisance to Sisko it was time for her to leave, but I wish she wasn't killed the way it was done.

She had difficulties memorizing the heavy science dialogue and trying to incorporate the characteristics of person who'd lived multiple life times including being the mentor to Sisko. IMO I thought her insecurities were unfounded; in the first 3 seasons I never thought or doubted her performance and I enjoyed her chemistry with Avery Brooks, it felt natural in my eyes. I hated her with Worf and I never thought they had any screen chemistry. What were her reasons? Tired of kissing Worf? Tired of Sisco calling her Old Man?
If I was an actor, I would like to continue my field in exploring new characters as a challenge so would be employers could see I'm capable to tackle a variety of roles. When my dad exposed me to Avery Brooks' previous work from Spenser: For Hire and A Man Called Hawk, I was jaw droppingly horrified and numb of what I saw. Don't get me wrong the role was brilliant but it was such a departure from the man I literally loved and looked up to. That Hawk... was intimidatingly mythical in the environment of organized crime. But . . . DS9 was a superior work and I would rather be Dax than an insecure owner of a NY diner.
Whether or not Dax was the better role for her, Terry Farrell was really an crossroads in her career. After appearing on the cover of TV Guide, she was getting auditions for guest spots and such, but she could not commit to doing the filming. DS9 was going to end the next season--no one disputed this. When she decided to leave--after all the drama with Berman--she had to go out on auditions. She didn't have Becker yet. She did not earn that role until after filming on the Season 6 finale wrapped. It sucks not having Jadzia for season 6, and Terry Farrell has expressed regret for how things went down, but arguably she had to strike while the irons were hot.But . . .
