I think they learned their lesson from Lorca in season 1, they made sure that Anson Mount would be able to play Pike as a straight shooter and it worked very well, I was ok with how it panned out in season 1 as I am not as particular as some on the board however even I can see what could have been, I have a hard time taking any MU stuff seriously which is probably why I am able to tolerate it more, same goes with time travel and all the inevitable plot holes.

There is still an option for Lorca as its only his MU counterpart that we saw die but season 3 is going to be far into the future so it rules him out unless the Discovery goes back.

Two shows with Pike and the Enterprise plus Lorca (secret S31 agent) and the Discovery could have been a really solid base lineup for CBS.

Or even three shows with the third being PU Georgiou and a new ship with us following Burnhams placements lasting one or two seasons on each ship, it could have even included the war with the Klingons as the backdrop, so many possibilities.

Just seems like a shame to me.

I'm dead sure you've either misread my post or you've misread me. Never have I ever said I think Discovery is bad. You know this.

No. My argument is: if someone doesn't like Discovery for reasons besides Micheal Burnham or the Spore Drive, then what makes them think they'd like a Pike Series any better? If they don't like the writing style, then it doesn't matter what they make the show about.

They can like the actor, they can like the character, but if they don't like everything else about the production, then those two things can only do so much. This is why I question why someone who doesn't like the season structure, story structure, writing, or production style of Discovery would suddenly do a complete turn-around and like a Pike Series.

And Dave Scarpa proves my point. Not to mention others (not Dave) who got very creative with their criticisms of "Q&A". The stuff they came up with is as much from outer space as the stars in the sky.

The trailer shown at SDCC has him in another short with the captain in the new one.

There must be a Pike vs Prime Lorca face off at some point.

Yes, I remember. The one scene seemed to have to do with Pike being relieved of command. It will be interesting to see what exactly it involves.

A Fighting Pike reference on a Star Trek message board? Talk about things you'd never expect to see.

Identifying with characters (actors) is the no.1 reason why people watch things. You can change everything around them entirely - in fact, TMP very much changed EVERYTHING from TOS, and TWOK almost everything again. And yet people still followed it. Because they liked the characters/actors combination.

Sure, there was a lot of criticism about everything else - people didn't like the pace and costumes and plot of TMP, others not the violence of TWOK. And the discussion about how realistic the "refit" is is still ongoing, 50 years later. But people liked the actors and following the characters.

That's why I think even people that don't like DIS want a Pike show. They will still complain about everything else - the set designs, canon, whatever... But people actually do like Pike. The problem is DIS entirely hinges on Burnham, and not everyone is sold on her. I like her well enough, but by god do I think the show would improve of they slowly switch to an ensemble-way of storytelling and giving other characters spotlight-episodes.

How could anyone you has seen Peck as Spock on Q&A could possibly want a disco Enterprise show. He was terrible. The Spock on Star Trek continues is better.

I'm lukewarm on Discovery for reasons that don't have much to do with Michael or the Spore Drive. I think the failures of the show mostly come down to execution - which in part can be boiled down to not having a strong showrunner who has moved forward with a consistent, cohesive vision for what the show should be - something which is IMHO essential if you want to do a heavily-serialized drama.

I don't think a "Discoprise" show would necessarily have the same issues, because they could find a solid showrunner who is interested in the potential of a Pike show, and sees it through to the conclusion. And hell, they could make it more episodic (or at least semi-serialized) to distinguish it more from the other dramatic Trek series either already existing or in development.

C’mon. Peck isn’t perfect, but neither is he the Continues amateur hour.

Simple. I actually believe that actor as the character. I do not believe the Star Trek Continues Spock is anything more than just an actor. I don't see Spock at all.

There's a distinct difference between a portrayal and an impression. A difference a lot of fans fail to see.

I think Nimoy and Quinto brought an undercurrent of intensity to the role that Peck's version has lacked so far. "Q & A" really didn't help matters in that department.

Whether that is a good or bad thing is up to the individual viewer.

Bit late here but I am assuming that some are not happy with Spocks character in the short treks?

My understanding is that he is shown in the short trek many years previously and he is somewhat emotional, that pretty much fits with what I expected as he is only half Vulcan, no surprise that he had trouble at the start of his career.

Just as it was also no surprise that seeing Vulcan and his mother destroyed pushed him off the deep end.

I think Peck has done a fine job as Spock, same goes for Quinto.

I think they pushed the character a bit too far outside of what he is supposed to be in "Q & A". But that is a personal interpretation of what I've seen on screen over the last 45 years.

A definite "your mileage may vary" type of thing.

I don't headcanon much, but here's how I see it.

We know that expressing emotions is generally really, really bad for Vulcans, because they feel negative emotions like anger very strongly. For them, as a people, suppression of emotions was the only way forward. The Romulans seem to have discovered another way to deal with the same inherently violent nature, but in their case it appears to have been accepting a totalitarian state which provides its own form of control.

Humans, on the other hand, cannot healthily suppress their emotions, and can be completely well-adjusted while embracing them.

Spock, being 50/50, probably does not feel emotions quite as deeply as other Vulcans do. It's safer for him to let little bits slip out, although it's not entirely without risk as is the case for humans. As a child, we know from Yesteryear that he decided to embrace his Vulcan heritage in order to fit in. But later in life he went to Starfleet, where he would have interacted with very few Vulcans. The result might have been he...erm...let down his guard a little. But then later on in life, due to his formative experiences as a Starfleet officer, the wall started being built once again.

In my head canon, Lorca is the Starfleet officer watching Vina dance in The Cage.

It would be great if Prime Lorca was an even bigger dick than Mirror Lorca.
