Does Stamets have a partner/husband?

What you call pandering, I call inclusion.

Exactly - my friend has recently become a big fan of a hospital drama in the UK called Holby City because two of their main female middle-aged characters are (have been, I think one of them has now left) involved in a same-sex relationship. This show has had lesbian, bisexual and gay characters in the past - but this is the first time, as a forty-something year old, she has seen a character she can identify with.

Likewise, many shows have had gay characters - but this is the first time that, as a 35 year old, that I am seeing a gay character on television that I might be able to identify with.

I understood his post in a completely different way.
I thought @Celestial meant that his family would refuse to watch it so he has to watch it alone. Not that he WANTS to "shield them".

^ yeah that's how I took it too - I think @Celestial is suffering "family stuck in the 1590s" syndrome.

I think the emoticon was about watching two potentially great shows - Supergirl and DSC - back to back. Not about the family.

He seems to have expressed regret that his family won't be willing to watch these shows with him because both shows feature gay couples.
But at least he'll get to watch both shows back-to-back and enjoy them, hence the smiley.

@Emilia and @cultcross have it correct. I'd rather I'd be able to watch Discovery either with or in view of my family, but they're stuck in their thinking, so I'll have to watch it when no one else is around. The smiley emoticon was because at least this will enable me to watch Discovery and Supergirl back-to-back.

I read Celestial's comment a slight bit different then both M and Emilia. I am assuming that he does not necessarily want to shield his family from gay people, but that if his parents (I am assuming he his a child, or teen) find out what he is watching they will at best yank his CBS All Access away from him, at worst Pa is gonna get the belt.

Nah. I'm in my early 40s. However, both my mother and I are physically disabled (in different ways), so I still live with them in order to help out around the house as my mother gets progressively worse. We used to watch Supergirl together in its first season. Yeah, that ended early in its second season.

Anyway, @M I apologize for offending you.

I was watching a BBC documentary the other week and there was a fungi scientist called Stamets - I'm guessing this character is named in his honour.

I am curious, does Stamets have a partner? I thought one of the crew was going to be his partner. (I'm late to this discussion)

He does, played by Wilson Cruz. This thread started quite a while before that announcement. :-)
