Starfleet Regulations

Lobo

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Newbie
Does anyone know if there are anything in Starfleet Regulations about appearance? All i remember is one episode of Voyager where Tuvok was training some former Marquis who are now part of the Voyager Crew. But i never heard anything specific. I also can't remember seeing any male Starfleet member ever having long hair. So i was curious if there might be a rule in the Regulations concerning that part. And i was hoping that maybe one of u guys knows about that. I really love Star Trek. I grew up with it. And i look foward to exchange thouds with likemindet ppl here. 🤜🤛

Worf. And as well as his long hair, he of course wears his baldric.

Generally speaking, not allowed to wear jewellery. Though there seems to be unspecified nuance to that regulation, and even then seems to be at your commanding officer's discretion. (Gerron and Laren weren't allowed their Bajoran earrings, though Laren was later allowed to.)

There is some restriction on headbands, but we don't know the specifics. We know that Henley's was "too festive" but Laren and Valeris' ones were apparently allowed.

Isn't Worf kind of an exeption due to being a Klingon? The thing is. I always wanted to buy me a starfleet Uniform for conventions and such. But i've got long brown hair. And i'm not shure how fitting that would look. Wich is why i went as Ezio Auditore instead. But i love Star Trek with all my heart. And i'd love to find a starfleet costume that works on me. So i was looking for an official loophole. Lol

I think that if you want to wear a Starfleet uniform then you absolutely should. Don't waste a moment on worrying if you would fit fictional uniform regulations. :)

They never say that Worf is allowed long hair because he's a Klingon, so there's your loophole.
Or if you want another one, you're dressed up as a guy who is 1/16th Klingon, or comes from a family that still carries the Augment virus. ;)

Hah yeah you're right. Of course you're right. It's probably more in my head. Like in my mind i should fit into the show. Lol
While forgetting what star trek was really about. Wich is being better.
Like Hemmingway said.
''True nobility is not being superior to your fellow men. But being superior to your former self.''
Or something to that extend. Lol
I really hope the franchise will get another shot.

Subjected to commanding officer's discretion. All the loophole needed.

And we see that with Worf and Ro. Initially, the later is not allowed her earring but that changes. Strict adherence to regulation will often depend on your commanding officer and their allowances.

Modern militaries and other uniform services in the western world do make allowances for cultural adornments like turbans or hijabs, which would explain why Worf is allowed his baldric. Should have allowed Ro and other Bajorans the earring. Then again, the episode Ensign Ro was rather clumsy in how they handled exposition about the Bajorans, Ro not being allowed the earring is likely just a by-product of that sloppy exposition. As for Gerron, the point that episode was trying to make was that Tuvok was being unreasonable in his approach to those particular Maquis.

Many places show that Star Fleet aims to be gender neutral whenever practical, so there's no reason to think a male-presenting member couldn't have long hair if he wanted. Presumably, it's not overly fashionable in the Federation writ large, but there seems to be no reason why it would be disallowed.

Put your hair in a braid or a bun the way women in modern navies do (or the way men did in 1800) and no-one even think about it.

Definitely something in the regulations about hair, although no specifics are given. In TWOK, when Kirk asks Saavik if she changed her hair style, she quickly responds “it’s still regulation”, implying that she thought Kirk was criticizing her for styling her hair in a way not allowed by Starfleet regulation.
