Starfleet really doesn't have a problem renaming ships. While some may consider it bad luck, Starfleet apparently doesn't, especially if the new name is in honor of another vessel and/or her crew of some distinction.
While the christening was seemingly inevitable I’m still of the opinion she should be the USS Picard. Completely in line with dedicating it to “you and your crew” and I think is a better use of SPS’s reaction/act to the reveal.
Plus it leaves the E story more open.
Plus it lets them continue to call any new show “Star Trek Picard” and take advantage of the familiarity and built in audience.
Nothing against “Legacy” but … IMHO this is a more appropriate honorarium.

I always liked the idea that the Enterprise-B was decommissioned and then brought back into service as the Lakota, since it's the only other time that Excelsior-variant was seen (real world reasons aside). But I suppose that would make it a fairly old ship.
I wonder just how late in the day they decided to name it the Enterprise rather than the "Picard". Matalas seemed to imply it was fairly early on but the lines from Jack in the shuttle mentioning the Enterprise and "you and your crew" are obviously ADR'd in. And then the following scene with Seven/Raffi/Jack makes no mention of any ship name, either in dialogue or background displays (which maybe isn't unusual on its own), and curiously reuses musical cues from episode 1, possibly the only scene to do so in the whole season?
Maybe the scene was originally longer and had its own cue, but had to be shortened and the earlier cues then fit better. Or maybe (more likely) they just ran out of money.
I like the idea of it being named the Picard in theory, but also feel like dialogue would be a bit strange: "let's get back to the Picard", "Seven to Picard", etc. All just sounds a bit... weird.

I think a ship shouldn't be named 'Picard" until he's DEAD dead, beyond reasonable doubt or argument.
In Star Trek World, he's considered not dead. Nor do Terry Matalas or Patrick Stewart see him as dead, and they have the final say.

I agree. Plus I don't get how naming it USS Picard would be honoring the whole crew. That would just be in honor of Picard, IMO. Renaming to Enterprise honors the crew who just saved Earth (and by doing so, Starfleet and eventually the galaxy) as well as ensuring the name of the ship will live on.
"Enterprise" honors the crew of the Enterprise-D and places the crew of the Titan on a ship with an even more legendary name. I mean Titan's done some epic stuff, but Enterprise is by far the larger name.
One wonders if this Constitution III-class starship was actually the lead ship of the class, but renamed Titan-A quickly, than renamed Enterprise-G after a limited service.

When did he serve in Starfleet, hold office, or do something historically significant? It doesn't work.
I believe they are referring to Picard's ancestor shown in Season 2.

It's definitely dwarfed by the D and seems much more a throwback to earlier designs. The D actually looks more advanced on the outside. The Gs saucer hull is pretty much the exacty same design as the 2278 TMP Enterprise. I like the D much more.
You should check out Ronald D. Moore's TV series For All Mankind on Apple+. I think you'd like it. The premise is that the Soviets beat us to the Moon -- and then a month later, land the first woman on the Moon, driving NASA to incorporate women and racial minorities into the astronaut corps much earlier than in real life and leading to the development of the kind of extensive space program we should have had.
I think she's really, really ugly from some angles as well.
But, since when does the Enterprise HAVE to be flagship? Let this one be a little middle-of-the-road science vessel.
Yeah, the newly built top of the range Odyssey II class Titan B can be the flagship instead.
It would be ironic if they ‘repurposed’ the decommissioned Enterprise F in to the new Titan. I mean in a similar way as to how Captain Riker’s Titan was deconstructed and rebuilt in to the Titan A.
