Discovery's lead character will be referred to in the series as “Number One”

The point it Pike used it. So someone other than Picard, in and out universe, used it in Star Trek.

 

You forget that Garth was a genius. I don't think arresting him was as simple as that. Not when we saw what he was capable of.

 

I tend to think it is weird. We're going to have two characters in the same general time frame going by the same moniker. I would be happier if this was just Number One from "The Cage", I don't care about it contradicting canon.

 

Maybe Picard read a book about Pike and thought it was catchy.

 

That was just the teaser. The rest of the episode is a cat and mouse game where Garth evades the crew and locks them out of all systems, like Data in "Brothers"

 

I don't think I like the idea of another episode about the Talosians though.

 

I never said it was a "rule." I just pointed out that it wasn't unique to Majel Barrett's pilot character.

 

Why do the Talosians needs to be involved?

Number One, Commander (Lt. or full), XO, Hey, you with 3 pips....They're all just informal ways of the captain addressing his/her executive officer.
The only thing that disappoints me is I was hoping down the line we'd get to see development of Majel's Number One character. Unless this is somehow her, I doubt we'll see her now. And she could have been (and was) Spock without the ears, and Data without the gold paint and neural net.

 

I figure it went down like this:
Garth: Kill these fools who refuse to bow before Lord Garth!
Number One and his security team blast Garth with phasers. Garth collapses.
Number One: Haul this crazy ass mother fucker to the brig.
( In my head canon, Number One is played by Samuel L. Jackson)

 

I still think that Garh would have anticipated that and they would have shot an innocent victim wearing a holographic disguise or something like that. Or maybe he'd be surrounded by a forcefield, or be a robot. As Trip would say "The possibilities are endless".

I understand the historical usage. We have already had two notable characters that have went by "Number One". If it isn't "The Cage" Number One, I honestly don't see the point. You can have more subtle callbacks to what came before.

 

What did we ever see that made you think he was a genius, other than exposition?

It certainly wasn't shown in TOS. He was a complete dipshit who couldn't even use his only-gained-after-he-was-arrested superpower effectively.

 

Star Trek doesn't do subtle.

 

I think they said so themselves. It was either Kirk or Spock that said that he was brilliant or a genius or something to that effect.

 

I estimate 35% losses taking Garth down (yeah I made that up). It would be the most devastating mutiny in the history of Starfleet. He would most likely anticipate the whole mutiny and be ready for them. It might even take a joint op between multiple CREWS. Only when his supporters see how far gone he is would they turn and join the mutiny and defeat him.
Ok, my hopes are dangerously high. If Garth is not captain, someone must promise to make this into a fan film. Written by Trek BBS. :-D

 

I just watched the other day and it's what Kirk says about his history that defines Garth's greatness. By the time we meet him, he's been interred for a long time, is out of touch, and that much crazier.
