Discovery Renewed for Season 2

Rick & Morty went 15 months between season 1 and 2. 16 months between seasons 2 an 3.

Arrested Development went 7 years between 3 & 4, and it will be 5 years between 4 and 5, the latter two both on Netflix.

Of course star trek is renewed, it single handedly more than doubled cbs all access. It's also a success because we have a star trek series back on the air. Thats a win win for us trekkies.
Now, let's not confuse the writers, in order for this to continue, they need to have a great story arc, and I am hoping for them to succeed.
Am betting on a trifecta.

A second season was foreordained. CBS knows it's a dead network if it doesn't develop its own streaming service, and right now Discovery is basically the only marquee show on the service which isn't also on broadcast TV or available somewhere else like Netflix. If it canceled Discovery it would have to go "back to the drawing board" and develop an entirely new batch of original content, which would be even more risky. Thus it was always going to be greenlit, even if it wasn't profitable in and of itself.

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Fans of the latest Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery, will be delighted to hear that the show has been renewed for...

Once Star Trek goes off the air between seasons and if everyone cancels their subscription. I have a feeling that the dead time between episodes will be shortened.

Wonderful news, although fully expected.

As far as new shows, I've said all along that I anticipate CBS would fill the gaps in between Discovery seasons with new Trek projects, and I still anticipate that happening. The show mentioned above, however, is not best for business in my opinion, as I think Trek needs its shows to be very different if they air at the same time. If it's another ship show, it shouldn't be a Starfleet vessel in my opinion, at least not unless Discovery becomes less about the USS Discovery herself (which is possible, given the show name doesn't seem a lock-in with the ship, like previous shows).

Either way, brilliant news. This first season has been glorious, and I'll happily take whatever new Trek CBS want to throw my way. I'm 31, and want to watch as much new Trek as I can before I end up six feet under. I'll let the next generations worry about franchise fatigue :D

Either they'll fill the gap with a new Trek tele-movie, or miniseries, or -- and I know this is crazy-- maybe, just MAYBE different audiences will come onboard to what their 5-6 other new shows that will be debuting over the next year.

I doubt they will shorten the time between seasons: they're counting on quality programming attracting audiences, not mediocre programming compromised by a rushed schedule. They've already proven this by their willingness to delay Season 1 by 9 months, and now they're seeing the rewards of that decision.

Only the ones that says Discovery is a failure and there would not be a season 2.
No one's gonna rage, pal. It's too bad that resources are going towards a sub-par effort, but Orville completely makes up for it. Action, jokes that are starting to land (starting with the fifth episode) and actual discovery.

And these are the people whom which William Shatner was raging at in his infamous Saturday Night Live skit. "Get a life", indeed.
