Discovery Renewed for Season 2

Million dollar question. Will Spock be on board?

I don't know. I would assume he'd have to be if Discovery is truly set in prime. Now, the producers have explicitly stated that Spock will not show up in Discovery. That doesn't prevent him from showing up in the spin off, though.

The only other tidbit of information I was told, because I asked, is on the Enterprise's design. I asked if it would be straight up TOS design or be re-imagined for modern aesthetics to match Discovery. They told me it would indeed be a redesign, but could not look like the JJPrise because of licensing with Paramount and it also not being the Kelvin Timeline.

While this is just speculation, I imagine John Eaves will be in charge of the redesign, and frankly, I hope that he is. I trust him more than anyone to do it right.

Was it implied the spin-off would be set before DSC? If it is set during DSC they could just say he was transferred off at that point. If it is before, then yeah he would need to be there.

I was told it would run parellel in time with Discovery, like DS9 and Voyager.
So if Season 2 of Discovery is in 2257, Pike's Enterprise show would start in 2257 and onward.

Hm, that would be interesting.
I hope the connie design is good.

Last I heard (late summer 2016) CBS is considering having the Enterprise show up in some fashion at the end of Season 2 in an episode of Discovery. This will launch a spin-off show about the Enterprise's missions under Pike that will air during Discovery's downtime and visa versa. Whether this is still CBS's strategy going forward...I don't know. Maybe they've changed their mind now and will do something else. This was just the last information I heard which may or may not still be accurate
.

Well, we'll have to wait and see. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing another TV series set in the 24th century. And an April based Trek show onboard the Enterprise would mean Spock appearing as well. I don't know know if that sounds likely to me...

I personally would not count on that. There is a vocal minority of people who want a 24th century show, but I don't think that has mass audience appeal. The Federation would be too overpowered anyway with transphasic torpedos and that batman hull armor. Hard to write interesting plots when you are god-like powerful.

All the other Trek series usually wrapped in March or April and then started shooting again in late spring/early summer.

Discovery wrapped shooting this month. Why can't they start shooting in January or February 2018, like they did with season 1?

The scale of Discovery is so much larger, it takes a lot more prep time to execute a show with production values this high.

Reading the behind-the-scenes on Memory Alpha on the earlier series, the most remarkable thing to me is how last minute it was. DS9 especially seems to have numerous stories about getting the script the night before shooting. It's amazing to me that they managed to produce shows that good under those conditions.

Why?

This doesn't affect them.
Y'know...Because REASONS! Didn't you get the memo?

Honestly, I do hope Orville continues on. It is a very good show and there is no reason whatsoever that it cannot coexist alongside Discovery.

But make it a sitcom. We can't go the M*A*S*H route and call it After Trek, though...
There was also the little-known single-episode spinoff pilot called W*A*L*T*E*R, about Radar after he returned home. Pretty lame, but still an interesting part of M*A*S*H history. And then, of course, there was also the Trapper John, MD spin-off who was supposed to be about the movie version of Trapper John McIntyre (to avoid licensing issues). IIRC, there was a photo of the original movie cast hanging on the wall in one episode.

Ya know, why not? I have cryptically dropped several hints about this several times on this forum and no one caught on. Lol. I've heard this from several sources now, so spilling the beans won't get any one person in trouble. Now, mind you, what I'm going to say was in consideration late summer 2016. So I don't know if these plans are still concrete. Also, possible SPOILERS IN THE PARAGRAPH BELOW.

This would coincide with several rumors about how they were looking to build multiple anthology series off the franchise, similar to what Star Wars is doing.

Coke or Pepsi? 'Both' is not an acceptable answer.
RC COLA BITCHES! :D :p

i can back this up with my own information, for what it's worth. i was up for a job on discovery in spring of 2016 and was told point blank they were doing spinoffs - plural. they did not act like it was a secret, but that was back in the fuller days and things have certainly changed.

Well, there are people who are eating crow now.

Even the worst Star Trek shows had a second season.

Do you think CBS will give them a bigger budget for the next season?

I tend to doubt it. The sets are built, soundtrack, props, 3d models all done. Also they can lose a few expensive actors/actresses too. They'll want to keep the show going and amortize the initial costs. The second season was almost a given as long as this made some money.Season 2 and beyond is probably where they expect profitability.

Thank you for sharing that, very interesting. Hope you don't mind but I've edited in some spoiler code to this thread, as it steps outside the spoilers people would expect to find here (i.e. up to 1x06 Discovery).

The nerdrage will be extreme as soon as they realise the E won't look the same. Dibs on not moderating that forum.
