Great news! With the success it has been on CBS All Access, Netflix internationally, and Space in Canada, I'm fully expecting more Star Trek spinoffs to be announced in the coming years.
The series, which underwent a showrunner change and multiple delays, will likely not return until 2019 Star Trek is only other show besides GoT (and Sopranos) that could get away with more than a year break.
That was already well known that a season 2 wouldnt be until 2019. However, season 1 won't finish until March-April 2018 so 2019 is only 9 months after the last season 1 episode.
It's not gonna be 24 episodes, that seems pretty certain. Yeah, 13 seems to be at the high end of what big budget series get these days. January 2019 is supposedly the target date for the final Game of Thrones season, you do not want to counterprogram that one, it's gonna suck all the cultural oxygen out.
So we'll be able to buy the McFarlane toys while the series is still running! It's been a while since I experienced that with Star Trek!
Wait a minute. I thought this show was a disaster and that CBS wanted to cancel it? The folks at Midnight's Edge kept insisting that Netflix was really upset that the show didn't look like it belonged in the Prime universe!
I would actually follow what Midnight's Edge said. They're the ones with their fingers on the pulse of what's going on with Star Trek. Had it wasn't for their cutting-edge reporting, we would have had no idea that the series would be replaced secretly by a Nick Meyer Trek series!
I wouldn't rule out a late 2018 start just yet. The sets are there, the main actors are cast. They could start filming around April for an October release of the first part of the season. Then do a longer Walking Dead-style break and come back in Spring 2019 for the second part.
Because there is a small but VERY vocal group of Trek fans who HATTEEEEE Discovery and shit on it at every opportunity. They also in the next breath praise The Orville for being REAL Star Trek because they are stuck in the past and blinded by nostalgia and pseudo-TNG aesthetics. I think some of them just spite-watch The Orville. If Orville doesn't get renewed for Season 2 and Discovery does, they'll shit a brick.
