Discovery ending with Season 5

More than likely. Season 3 has already started filming.
Supposedly Pre-Production has started and actual filming starts May 2 and goes through September (If these reports are indeed accurate, which I honestly hope they are):

Of course there's still nothing official from Paramount+ yet.

These are both dated February 23, 2023 and almost certainly draw from the same source - someone with direct access to industry filming documents. The inclusion of a working title rather seals the deal.

Of course, again, and as we all seem to be in agreement upon, if it isn't straight from Paramount it isn't confirmation. It rests on us as individuals to determine our degree of buy-in. Personally, though, I'm inclined to say it's fairly likely to be genuine, yep.

It doesn't prove it because correlation does not equal causality.

If S3 of PIC was terrible, and featured the original cast, I think it would still probably be disliked just like S1 and S2 were.
I think if it were just SNW then maybe not. But thus far what I am seeing repeated by fans is that the legacy characters make the difference in enjoyment.

So, yes, not proof, but an indication of the trend.

Not sure how I feel.

In many ways I've absolutely loathed Disco. I think many of the characters are poorly written. It was billed as a "nu-trek" and trying to be different but then proceeded to spend a couple of seasons retreading a bunch of boring stuff we'd seen a million times before, just with snazzy visuals.

But I can't fault it for bringing back Trek after 15 years of wandering in the weeds.

It feels like it was cut a bit badly at the knees, with rotating showrunners none of whom seemed fully sure of what they wanted from the show itself and simultaneously trying to sell us something new but then trying to keep stale storybeats. It somehow managed to revolutionise and start off a bit stale to begin with, and fall between two stools. Other shows have stuck the landing far better.

Ultimately, it was a $104m+ per season run, in which you can see from Rotten Tomatoes from the diminishing returns in terms of professional and audience reviews. The figures probably aren't that great and have only been getting quietly worse.

Legacy characters work for Picard, and they work for Prodigy. In the former its been in the hope we'd see our favourites again. In the latter its because many of the intended audience likely now have kids of their own, and have someone in there they're familiar with and to allow them to tune in with.

In Lower Decks they are largely played very well for laughs or easter eggs, and work fine that way.

So it is working for fans who want that. Fair enough but it isn't enough for me.

Or grandkids if you're talking about original TOS fans. And yes Prodigy works well for that but it's a shame that STP and STD can't.

But even if there are legacy characters it doesn't matter much if the writing is fundamentally different from where those characters originated from. As much as I want my kids to enjoy the character of Picard, Data, etcc I can't because there's Admiral Fuckety Fuck and other such moments.

What are "fans" going to hate watch now and then post 100 times how they hated it now?
Unless you have a crystal ball. You must watch a show once to know if you like it, or not.
I will continue to "like watch" SNW, Picard S3, Enterprise, Voyager, DS9, STNG, STOS.
No need to hate watch here. I already know what to avoid.

Have you tried PIC Season 3? Because there are people who hated the first 2 seasons and Discovery who are loving that one.

Someone in the Federation Council Chamber in ST4 yells "Pompous ass' at the Klingon Ambassador as he walks out of the room.

I have. It's no different to me. It's terrible. I wonder if people who didn't like the first 2 seasons now like it because Worf is there, Riker, etc...but that doesn't mean much to me. Don't get me wrong. I love those characters but if the writing ain't there then.....

Yes but 'ass' didn't always have the meaning it has today. 'Ass' back then was short for 'jackass'. It also had the other meaning as well but back then media could play it up as the other non-bad word.

Meh, I read ass in chronicles of Narnia when I was 12.

None. My comment was in regards to being a family show.
I don’t think Star Trek was conceived as a family show. I think GR envisioned is an adult drama that explored topical issues through the lens of Science Fiction. That it appealed to the kids (and I was one in 1966) wasn’t quite what he wanted. It also had to conform to standards and practices of the day. So a line like “let’s get the hell out of here” caused much hand-ringing on all levels. The S&P have changed over the years and the use of a word like “hell” doesn’t even bat an eye, even on a “family” show. Next Gen could use the word “shit” as long at it was in French, “Shite” pops up on shows that would blanche at using “shit”.
