Deanna Troi: What changes would you make

TS - I really like your idea of Troi shifting through different realities. It's always interesting to see what different lives the characters could have lived if things had panned out differently.

One that came to mind is one where Deanna is part Borg and the Borg are NOT a FULL collective

This is a variant on an idea I had What if Betazoids were were the result of a lost colony the people they were cut off from built cybernetic implants to assist their military that eventualy lead to the Borg

Interesting ideas, but I find major issues with two frequent proposals in this thread:

Making Troi a full telepath: Unfortunately while making a crew mamber a full telepath sounds cool, in reality their would have to be so many artificial limits imposed on her ability that it wouldn't be worth it. Imagine how many TNG episodes would have been resolved in 5 minutes or less if Troi was a full telepath. To avoid that they would have to come up with many ridiculous plot devices to limit her ability. (telepathic shield, telepathic enemies in every other episode, sudden losses of abilities for no reason... the list goes on)

No, I think making her an Empath was the right solution. it just wasn't executed very well.

Making Troi a capable of telekinesis: Ugh. Is this X-Men or Star Trek? Plus even moreso than full telepathy, they would have to 'nerf' that ability in ridiculous amounts.

Telekinesis - No thanks.

I actually liked the way Deanna was portrayed overall - taking the seven seasons into account.

Sure, there were no doubt many ways the character might have been given more onscreen time, but I think that Sirtis did a great job with what she was given and - like the rest of them (except perhaps, Gates, who IMO was woefully served by TPTB) was able to embue her character with real oomph along the way.

Telekinesis--They made the character so helpless at times that Sarah Jane Smith could BEAT her up with ease. Since WHEN does Marvel's X MEN OWN the RIGHT'S to telekinetic powers

Full Telepath - why would a Telepath want or read minds ALL THE TIME
Vulcans ignore their Telepatic powers at times and use them when it suits their interest ALSO Vulcans DO NOT need to have physical contact for their Telepathy

Cloud is not fully convinced and asks Kirk to complete the "sacred words" starting with 'E Plebneesta' from an ancient document he produced. Unfortunately, Kirk cannot quite decipher the words, despite their familiarity, and suggests instead that he and Tracey duel to the death — stating good always triumphs over evil. As Kirk and Tracey begin to fight, Spock notices a communicator near Cloud's female companion, and makes a mental suggestion which causes her to pick it up and activate it. (Neither she nor Spock speak into the communicator, but the implication is that she activated its emergency-alert signal.) Soon, just as Kirk subdues Tracey, Sulu and a security detail beam down to investigate the situation. Kirk spares Tracey's life and has him taken into custody to face Federation charges."

But the thing about Vulcans is that - except in the occasional somewhat tedious exception - they have to be in physical contact with the other person in order to read their thoughts. So that nicely gets around the whole "If he's a telepath, how come he didn't know that Scotty was innocent of murder?" or "If she's a telepath, how come she didn't know the guy negotiating for the wormhole was a slimeball?" or whatever.

Also forgot to mention that Doctor Who ignores his telepathic abilities MOST of the time

Did I write that they owned the copyright? No. Just that it would turn into a more X-men -like show, which characters with outlandish abilities. Not typical trek characters that are easy to identify with.

Trek so far has limited telekinesis to 'god-like' or very advanced lifeforms. To have regular crew-members running around with such abilities would be... perhaps not stupid, but close to it. 'Heroes on a starship'?

A character that has a very useful ability that they don't use very often (or when it would be useful) is just going to annoy the audience. It would be like Spock choosing not to use his logic most of the time, or Data deliberately slowing down his computational powers.

Sure you can have a telepathic Troi who is strictly limited by her own morality to not scan others. But then what is the use of her character having that power? Have you really improved that character at all?

All this rejiggering of the Troi character seems to miss the basic point. She 'sucked' because the writers/producers did not use her character intelligently. I don't see how heaping all kinds of superhuman abilities on her would have solved that.
