DC Comics - Ongoing Discussion - SPOILERS

I think it's great that creators are being given the freedom to tell the stories they want without being bogged down by what's going on in the rest of the DCU at any given moment. I read an interview with Walt Simsonson the other day and he says that's why he left the Avengers years ago after only 11 issues.

When I'm doing stories, I like to play a long game. It's one of the reasons I'm not fit for the current superhero stuff, because there are so many crossovers and so much stuff comes down from up top. It's hard to plan long story arcs and have them reach fulfillment without a lot of interruptions. "Avengers" was the first time I ran into that. I would be doing a three-issue story and I'd be told in the middle of it, "This month Thor is not on Earth so you can't use him in 'The Avengers'" -- and I'd be in the middle of my story. That was a fictitious example; that's not one of the ones that actually happened, but that's what I ran into.

Hopefully this "new" way of doing things over at DC will give us some better stories.

They didn't do a very good job in the editing department though. I can't remember the specifics but sometime during Planet Hulk, or Civil War, or Skrull invasion the story had Wolverine in three different comics doing different things. The character was in three places at once in the overall story.

Walter Simonson was working for Marvel in the 80s! That was the days of obsessive editors Mark Grunewald and where continuity was king.

The Marvel Quesada-era you are talking about is a different animal and like DC now pretty much said they didn't care about policing continuity.

We'll find out in the next few months when the sales returns start coming in if it is a return...but so far I have really enjoyed the June mini-relaunch.

It's really going to be an interesting October to see what they do with the Bat Books. I believe Peter Tomasi teased a new project for 2016...probably in time for "Dawn of Justice".

Just read JLA #1. I can never decide if Bryan Hitch's artwork is amazing or terrible. It's somehow both at the same time.
i feel the same way. but i thought JLA #1 was pretty decent.

I see what you mean about the art. I'm not too familiar with Hitch's work but some panels looked great and others were just awful. There was one panel of The Flash where he was all stretched out with weird proportions that had me wondering how he deemed this panel good enough.

Decent story though. I'll be interested to see where it goes from here.

I read "Prez" and thought it was tremendous. LOVE the satire in the book. The art is great as well. "Robin: Son of Batman" was better than I had originally anticipated, Gleeson actually knows the character really well, and so far is one of the best artist turned writers they've granted a book to IMO.

Speaking of which...also read Hitch's "JLA: Justice League of America #1" and agree with the above posts. Hitch's art in this book is inconsistent at best...but the story is interesting and the writing was actually decent. Not as bad as I thought...nothing like Finch.

I don't remember this massive demon beast that Damien has a pet. Is that from when he had the super powers and went to the Leviathan farm where the Heretic was grown? I remember him fighting monsters there...

I believe that is what is being implied yes. Would seem that Damian has turned the island into his own Bat Cave.

Well Superman #41 didn't really answer many questions. It was an ok start to "Truth" but it didn't wow me. Hopefully issue #42 will ramp it up a bit.

Apparently the reason why the story is being told out of order is because "Superman" has been delayed...if I understood Rich's latest report on it yesterday.

That's not what I got out of the Bleeding Cool article. (I assume you're referring to this one.) What I got out of it was that "Truth" was planned as a non-linear story, and the reasons for what happened will be revealed as the story goes on.

It's still possible there is editorial conflicts. Berganza as an editor is very hands on in terms of story and has some history of that conflicts with writers and is most infamous for letting McDuffie go because of Rich Jonston's idiotic shenanigans.

I finally got around to readin Superman and action Comics 41, so far so good. I'm not sure why the Joker was on the cover of Action Comics? I felt the stories were kind of short, but I still liked them.

One wick thought is I wonder if they are going explore Superman with themes? What I mean is what if the next story line is Justice followed by The American Way. I think that would be cool.
