Contemporary Anime/Manga in the vein of Gundam/Macross?

My beef is with SEED Destiny more than anything else, I really like 00 it doesn't have to be the greatest, I'm fine with something I can enjoy on at least some level, like most of the AUs, I'm just glad they switch producers in this franchise often enough, unlike Star Trek that got stuck with Berman for almost 20 years.

^I have to agree there, look how much ''BUZE'' There is for TREK ''now'' that there's FRESH blood! And I know Gundam-00 Dosent ''have'' to be the best, it's just that I was hopeing that sinse G-00 is set in our ''Timeline'' that it would be just a little more ''Real ''N'' Grity'' Is all I'm saying.

Well for the record all the stuff on my list is basically what I rated as 10 (Masterpiece), 9 (Excellent), and maybe a few 8s (Very Good) if I ran out of those respectively so there really isn't much difference in how much I liked them all. I do kind of tend to favor series which were well balanced. What I mean by that is series that I enjoyed but also those which were exceptional in area of production. Things like character development, story quality, music I liked, exceptional visuals/animation, and whether it was conclusive and resolved all plot threads that I cared about.
looking at your list, it looks like we enjoy almost all the same stuff; I'm especially glad to see another Suzuka fan out there. I thought I was the only one

If you enjoyed the anime I suggest reading the manga as well. It continues on past the point where the anime stopped. I'll just say...a lot of stuff happens.
yep, I'm actually a pretty big fan of the manga. I'm mostly up to date with the US releases. There may be a volume out that I have not read yet. Admitadly, anime isnt my big passion...manga is lol. I usualy use anime as a sort of preview or trailer for manga. If I find a show I like, I track down the manga and dump un-necessary amounts of money on it :borg:

Also yeah there aren't many anime romance series that are actually mostly serious like this one and aren't harem series. I personally was rooting for Honoka, though. A couple in a relationship that can't stop fighting whenever they're together is not a good match in my opinion. Suzuka wasn't a bitch, no, but she's definitely at fault for sending off such skitzophrenic mixed signals. Her transformations from cute and likable to cold, angry, and sometimes vindictive were sometimes really annoying.
One scene in particular really made me seriously angry at her. It was played down in the anime, but it's the scene with the fireflies. Suzuka asks him to show her how he was going to confess to that random girl and so he does the trick with the firefly and the bell flower. She then proceeds to mess with Yamato's feelings by "agreeing" to date him and then tearing him down and making fun of him. I felt this was extremely cruel at this point because she knew exactly how he felt about her and that it would hurt him. At this point I would have loved for him to hit her or at least be outraged and tell her off but it didn't happen. :borg:

However, I thought the anime did indeed work very nicely after they resolved some things. They did a good job in both incarnations in making her actions understandable if not justifiable to the point where I didn't mind her.
Yeah, Suzuka had her moments where she wasnt exactly the nicest person but such is life lol.
I think it sucks.
So do a lot of people. But a lot of their reasoning for toting Seed Destiny as gargage never made any sense to me. The only problems I had with it was all the reused stock footage and the overabundance of recap episodes.
I think the biggest issue with seed is that it recycled alot of plot points from the first season, apparently because the creative team for seed was asleep at the wheel and had a hard time getting scripts in on time or something. And yeah, the recap episodes were a tad rediculous. I remember in the final 10 episodes they had TWO recap episodes. It did give me the chance to see more Cagalli though, so I can forgive the show for its flaws

Ah yes another plus for Destiny: Cagali in that dress was smokin' hot.

I'm backwards. I only tend to check out the manga if I liked the anime enough or if it continued on past the point the anime ended. Speaking of manga you just reminded me of my 43 volume book backlog which I should probabally work on eventually. I went a little overboard when the Walden Books in my mall was having a going out of bussiness sale.

Exactly how I feel, I wish people would stop danceing around such serius topics, and just act like ''ADULTS'' And ya I always thought it funny when cartoon network pulled gundam off the air and gave that lame excuse about how it (GUNDAM) was NOW inappropriate after 9/11 ( Okay let me get this straght, WAR is fun during ''peace'' time, but WAR is bad ''DURING'' war time? wtf) But after it wasn't! Wow! Talk about conflicting messeges! And yah!I never did understand why Gundam 00 was ( still IS!) as populer in japan!?! it was not the ''Best'' of the franchise.
Yeah, I find it amusing that nukes are off limits yet other shows feature extreme ultra-violence such as that in Mnemosyne and disturbing controversial subjects like incest brought up in shows like Koi Kaze. Not that I mind any of that stuff it's good get shaken up every once in a while. :wtf:

On a side note speaking of Mnemosyne I was completely certain this would never ever be liscensed here since it's one of the most disturbing, violent, and depraved things out there (while still actually managing to be good and not hentai)...but aparently Funimation believes it has a market. I'm probabally the only person who'd buy it, thumbs up to good old Funi. :techman::evil:

Thats not overboard, that's tactically sound ;) I actually did something similar with anime recently, with Best Buy's 50 percent off sale for all anime at select stores. My wallet is still recovering

My store was sparred that....so far, haven't been there in a couple weeks. Anime must sell well there.

I still have (after finding another pile elsewhere):

Bleach 26
Code Geass: Lulouche of the Rebellion 1-2
Code Geass: Suzaku of the Counterattack 1
Claymore 14
Eureka Seven 1, 4, 5
Gundam-Ecole du Ciel 2-4
Higurashi 1
Kannazuki no Miko 2
Kare Kano 1-21
King of Thorn 1-2
Midori Days 6-8
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days 1-6
Suzuka 11

I don't know where to start....alphabetically I suppose.

So I caught up on Tytania and it's kind of odd because of how the show is framed. The "bad guys" get a lot, if not more, screen time than the dude who is supposed to be the main character. They're also not afraid to make drastic changes in the cast/plot, so it feels like the show is much more even... maybe there will be some kind of work up to a large climax, but some of the things that happened as the series progressed would be treated as big cliffhangers on a standard American TV series.

Anyway, off to Gundam 00 I think.

^:wtf: I cant belive (I'm a little afraid to)I'm going to ask this, but what is this Mnemosyne About!:wtf::shifty:

Its sort of like the exploits of a chick who cant die. Plenty of violence and plenty of fan service. The plot ran a little thin towards the end but being only 6 episodes, you wont waste too much time giving it a shot

^and the feelings were mutual with her as well though.

Koi Kaze
revolves around two siblings who were raised apart named Koshiro and Nanoka. Through circumstances they meet and begin to have feelings for each other without knowing this. After learning the truth they struggle to deal with wierd disturbing feelings that neither of them can just dismiss made more complex that Nanoka has moved into her father's and Koshiro'a place to attend a nearby High School as well as the fact that she's only 15 and he's like 24. Much awkwardness, and angst ensues, however, it is surprisingly tastefull and well written. Sick as hell, but it's a masterpiece. It's actually a pretty darn good romance if you get past the incest.

It made even further controversial by the fact that it's not just implied incest. After Koshiro moves out in the last episode to distance himself from her she tracks him down. The the two of them talk it over and actually give in to their feelings and do the deed in his apartment.

Well, it you really want to know read on:
Incest is the big one and I'm not just talking about how they feel about each other, they actually do end up making love in the last episode and basically agreeing to continue the relationship despite the consequences and what others think after having had a long talk.

Which brings up a statatory rape issue as well given the huge age difference between them.

There's also masturbation and sniffing of used undergarments.

It's actually a pretty darn good romance if you get past the incest.

I'm sorry, but that's a funny sentence.
Oh, I agree, but if you watch the series you will know what I mean, and maybe agree. Scarry 'ain't it?

Alright, you sold me...

*goes to acquire*

and about 70% of THOSE also involve Lolita Complexes

if you want a good space-setting series, tenchi GXP is allright, if you take it as seperate from the original, because they retconned alot of stuff from the original to "fit it in" with it, and alot of the retconning pissed me off, despite the series being very watchable

Mehh, incest means nothing to the Japanese. About 90 percent of anime involves sister complexes :p
