Contemporary Anime/Manga in the vein of Gundam/Macross?

The king of anime Space Opera? That would be "The legend of Galactic Heroes".

Yeah, but he wants space opera; not full on soap opera - there's a LOT of long winded dialogue in LoGH ;)
That's what I am afraid of. I kind of want to watch it...but its long....very long...and I'm not sure if i have the energy for such a project. And thats not considering all of the OVAs and movies and spin off series.

I can relate to that it's like how I'd like to continue watching Case Closed (Detective Konan) since it was good and there aren't many mystery/detective anime...only it's 500+ episodes and has a ton of movies too. I don't really want to make any long term commitments to series as long as that. I prefer to stick to the nice 12 to 26 ranged shows with the occasional 52 episode show (although if it's interesting enough I do usually end up finishing what I start.). Plus, it's basically a law of anime that anything with more episodes than that degenerates into repetitiveness and either ends badly or is canceled. Aside from a few cases like Monster (74 episodes), which was fantastic and well written, I'd say that it's pretty true.

The oldest series I've actually watched was Mobile Suit Gundam from from 1979 I think. I've also seen lots of 80's stuff like Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road and Bubblegum Crisis. The majority of the 596 anime that I've seen came from the 90's and the current decade though.

I guess the large cannons are the WMDs of choice in these shows if you consider the fact that, in UC nukes are supposed to be banned under the antarctic treaty, and in SEED they didn't work because of the N jammers, in 00 I'm not sure if GN particles have an effect on conventional nukes. A real world explanation might be that using nukes are a taboo considering the use of nukes on Japan during WWII.

Best Gundam Super Weapon: Colony Drop

This is, in fact, 100% true :techman:
I find it rather Ironic that ''NUKES'' may be considerd a taboo subject, yet a ''COLONY'' slaming in to the earth wipeing out ''BILLIONS'' of human lives is not?:wtf:

yeah, but Detective Conan is a murder of the week show, and it's main story arch is fairly simple, plus the movies, other than the first, released annualy during golden week, have been in the top 10 highest grossing movies in Japan, it's my favorite anime despite it being a killer of the week thing

I also finished Macross Frontier and... so awesome. It really is the BSG story, complete with finding "a home planet" and a "fleet on the run" but just done so much better. I didn't even mind Alto's overacting screams (AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!).
I did find the ending a bit cheeky though... but, hey, I kind of understand why they did it.
I LOVED the ending. Not as much as my brother though who's seen the final two episodes about fifteen times  Loads of awesome and the good kind of fanservice, plus they even redeemed Ranka a bit in the end. But Sheryl is still best.

I mean the actual ending though, where they don't resolve the love triangle. That way ALL the shippers are happy.

I believe Clannad After Story is only going to be 24 episodes, and its already at episode 20 or so. And yeah, Haruhi season 2 is probably the show im looking forward too more than just about anything else (other than a possible continuation of FMP that is lol)

21 of After Story is the latest. 22 is the last episode of actualy story, 23-24 are supposedly extra episodes like the Tomoya X Tomoyo alternate episode from the first season.

As for Haruhi season 2: Can't wait! Can't wait! Can't wait! Though I'm sure you're with me in that boat. ;)
What's starting in April is actually Haruhi (the original series) going into syndication. Sorry to disappoint any fans but it was initially reported as as a new series but was later corrected by Kyoto Animation and Kadokawa Shoten. Haruhi 2 has disappeared from ANN as well and we're back to square one. Ironic since the title of 2nd book is something like The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzimiya. :(

There are some original net animated shorts out though from the franchise. Haven't watched them though.

See, I heard that as well but then I then heard that this was wrong and it actually is going to be airing in April and that it is a giant troll on a previous troll. I guess time will tell lol. Until then, the Haruhi-chan and Nyroon Churya-san shorts are a pretty interesting distraction. I would like the real deal though

Nonsense, you just need to worship the anime goddess more. :p

Yeah, it manages to be both creepy and awesome at once.

Warning: Hypno-Haruhi may enduce epileptic seizures and intense cravings for Aya Hirano music.

Perhaps firehawk should consider Haruhi as his next choice? lol. After all, it was the unique combination of watching Haruhi, FMP and Eva all at the same time that made me a fan of anime.

This article is an interesting read and goes into detail why super weapons that aren't conventional nukes are used. There are a lot more anime/mecha cliches that I find way more tiring and annoying like whiny accidental teenage pilots and keys left in the ignition.

A girl that sounds like a "Q"? Nice.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm surprised that the Shin Megami Tensai Persona series hasn't been adapted into an anime. It's teens in a highschool fighting demons with summons... seems almost perfect.

Well, it is one of best anime in the comedy genre I'd say. Very good watch.

Aya Hirano is the Japanese voice actress for Haruhi Suzimiya in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya who's also an acomplished and talented singer.
