Contemporary Anime/Manga in the vein of Gundam/Macross?

Who says they need a giant super weapon though? War can be made dramatic without such devises and I thought Gundam 00 would have been better without it. After all its first season didn't need it and it would be nice to see Gundam work without that plot crutch.
I agree that the producers should find other ways to create drama, and relegate massive energy weapons to a status similar to the large guns mounted on ships like the Nahel Argama.

I agree with that! we don't have giant lazzer ''MEGA-DETH CANNON'S'' and war is ''pretty'' dramatic & horrific without one! Oh! and what's this I hear about ''man eating bugs from (gundam) f-91''? that's the first time I'm hearing that!?
I guess the large cannons are the WMDs of choice in these shows if you consider the fact that, in UC nukes are supposed to be banned under the antarctic treaty, and in SEED they didn't work because of the N jammers, in 00 I'm not sure if GN particles have an effect on conventional nukes. A real world explanation might be that using nukes are a taboo considering the use of nukes on Japan during WWII. The bug things I'm talking about from F91 are these they have razor blades that cut people up.

Large energy weapons have been a staple from Yamato, to Gundam to Macross, I'm not sure what other super weapons they could do that would fit, if you wanna see different check out those man eating bug things from F-91.

How about giant space drill? :)

Nah it only works if you have either a black hole or something that makes blackholes that you can drop down the mined hole to the planet core.

^Aren't they duing that already with the NU TREK movie?:p

Im amazed at all the suggestions for Code Geass. Its good & I love it(Orange-kun is pure WIN!) but it also sometimes feels as if it was made by 13 year old schoolgirls. Im only up to ep 14 of R2 but I heard it gets really cracky after that, hehe...

I also thought Gurren Laggan was fun, but keep in mind its a mech show from the guys who made FLCL so...yeah. :p

The king of anime Space Opera? That would be "The legend of Galactic Heroes".

Hey, firehawk12 I know you said you were looking for ''mech'' anime, but have you thought about ''other'' types of anime still withen the realms of sci-fi? like Wolf's Rain, Ergo Proxy or Witch Hunter Robin? Just a thought.

I'm really open to anything. The only problem is that Gundam and Macross are my only frame of reference, so I had to start there. :)

I'm thinking of checking out Planetes soon, because the concept sounds kind of cool. Any suggestions are welcome though!

I think even the first season is getting kind of silly. But I'm getting into it too. :)
I couldn't resist so I spoiled the ending for R2 and well, I can't believe it!

I also finished Macross Frontier and... so awesome. It really is the BSG story, complete with finding "a home planet" and a "fleet on the run" but just done so much better. I didn't even mind Alto's overacting screams (AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!).
I did find the ending a bit cheeky though... but, hey, I kind of understand why they did it.
It makes me want to check out the "older" contemporary Macross series. Are they anything like this one?

Macross, Macross Plus and Macross Zero are all awesome. Macross Plus was made in the early 90s and still looks better tna 99% of the anime made even today. Macross Zero is a prequal series and has a very different feel from the other shows but is still entertaining. Macross is the starter of it all and is the oldest anime series ive watched to date. it was definetly worth the time.

Then there is Macross Seven. I watched it because im a completest. Watch this one with caution ;)

Since you are looking for some other series I would also recomend the Full Metal Panic series. Im not sure if i recomended this one already....but it really cant be recomended enough lol. its the perfect balance of action, comedy and drama

^ WOW! the oldest animes I ever saw were, GI-GAN-TOR!;) and Astro Boy! and they were in ''BLACK N WHITE'' you have never seen these?

You're right about that.

I'm still hopping for a fourth season. But between the current state of the Novels and Kyo-Ani as busy as it is, my hope is waning.

It's too bad because there's a lot of plot threads still left.

I've watched them in the sense that they were on cartoon network at 4am but i wouldn't say i actually WATCHED watched them. I suppose you can also toss speed racer into the list

For a little while I was losing hope as well, but with the news that Munto will only be 9 episodes, Clannad After Story ending soon, and with Haruhi season 2 airing in April, it seems that Kyo-Ani may be free for another project or two by this fall. It doesnt hurt either that the novels have finaly ended so there is a ton of material justt waiting to be animated :)

Well let's hope so. Someone told me Clanned was going to run long. (And I still need to catch up. :o )

As for Haruhi season 2: Can't wait! Can't wait! Can't wait! Though I'm sure you're with me in that boat. ;)

So maybe with a little luck well see a new FMP series (or even just an OVA) by the start of the '10 season.

I believe Clannad After Story is only going to be 24 episodes, and its already at episode 20 or so. And yeah, Haruhi season 2 is probably the show im looking forward too more than just about anything else (other than a possible continuation of FMP that is lol)

I LOVED the ending. Not as much as my brother though who's seen the final two episodes about fifteen times  Loads of awesome and the good kind of fanservice, plus they even redeemed Ranka a bit in the end. But Sheryl is still best.
