News Captain Pike Has Been Cast

DaXd1-fU0AA7mxW.jpg

O'BRIEN: Sorry, no one named Vina here, friend.

No secret Pike is one of my favourite Star Trek characters. He was such a tortured cerebral character in The Cage, I liked that. It was like having Bruce Wayne as Captain of the Enterprise. This character had a lot of potential.
Hey, you and I agree! Pike was underappreciated in my opinion. Glad to see him back.

No. Low lighting keeps the bill down.
Saving power during a war effort is just logical.

This is a perfect casting choice! I remember seeing that post above how someone thought he should be Pike, and it's perfect!

Seeing him in interviews at Comic Con, he's very personable and in shows he's been in, he'll be able to bring his own take to the role, along with honoring Hunter.

Although Hell on Wheels played very loosely with historic fact (trains are another of my passions), Mount and Meaney were great in that series (along with most of the cast).

In fact, Mount took over the reigns as producer and I believe directed some episodes.

I'm looking forward to seeing him as Pike!
Agreed! Hell on Wheels was a terrific show. While they took some liberties with historical accuracy, the production design and cast were great, and Mount did a heck of a job.

I wonder if Anson Mount will be a series regular, like Jason Isaacs was.

This could be another situation like Isaacs, where he was leagues more engaging than STD's actual series lead.

Mount as Pike is exciting news, but also somewhat concerning. Now this show is playing with some big gun canon characters in order to justify it's presence in Star Trek continuity.

I haven't been too pleased with their handling of genocidal Sarek, and murderous Mudd. I hope Pike is handled well, because this version of the character will likely largely define the character.

I'm sure he will be revealed to be a Section 31 agent.

Pike as Section 31?

Personally, I'm hoping they reveal that Pike was in the Starfleet military service prior to becoming a command-level officer in Starfleet.

Would explain his militaristic demeanour. He never came off as the explorer type. And it would explain his line about him not being used to women on his bridge.

Please no on Pike being in Section 31.

But great casting on Mount! Very good choice.

How quick? :D
You may want to check those scanners at the nearest starbase. :D

Checked the first page of the Discovery forums on my phone at lunch break. I was actually surprised that I didn't see anything. Maybe needed to refresh cache.

Edit: Now I know how I missed it. For some reason, the creator of the first post is on my ignore list.

Good news on the casting. He was great in Hell on Wheels.

But if they couldn't have cast Mount, another good choice might have been Jim Caviezel.

Or Timothy Olyphant from Deadwood and Justified, if he wasn't currently tied Netflix's Santa Clarita Diet. It's interesting how modern Western actors seem to be a good fit for Star Trek. Could we fit Clint Eastwood in there?

That is the danger, every time we get a new Captain introduced it will cast a shadow over the main characters, it helps that we now know that Lorca was never in it for the long haul though.

Its great to see Pike on screen but they need to be careful, the more characters they introduce and then potentially remove the greater the possibility of annoying their fans.

On the flip side there will be some fans who wont be willing to buy into characters fearing that they wont be around very long.

Its a thin line to walk.

If they're going to gauge their story and casting choices on what has the least potential for annoying the fans, they should have quit a long, LONG time ago.

Fold up shop and call it a day.

Pike is revealed as a Section 31 Agent, recruited by his mentor Admiral Marcus.

Michael Burnham inspires Pike to change his ways, and betray Section 31 in order to embrace Starfleet ethics and ideals.

Section 31 vows to eliminate Pike and plants an explosive on his J-Class training vessel after his Captaincy of Enterprise has ended.

Pike knows Section 31 did this, but is unable to reveal it as he is left in a severely injured state;

Also, Tilly is on the training vessel and comments on how hot Pike is....as he is burning in the explosion;

STD writers, hire me.

Good choice. Looks the part and even says the right things:

I HAVE JOINED STARFLEET!!!

Well, the cat’s finally out of the bag and I can stop pretending I’m not in Toronto. I could NOT be more excited to FINALLY be a part of the series that is partly responsible for me taking this roller coaster ride through the entertainment industry.

A few days ago I had my first opportuntity to sit in the captain’s chair… and I’m not embarassed to say I got a little emotional. I have been a Star Trek fan since about the age of 8 when I first discovered the original series when it was syndicated throughout the United States on our various local stations… AND to play a Captain… AND for that captain to be the iconic Christopher Pike… AND to be doing it on a show thas has the highest production values I’ve ever seen on television… AND to be doing it with CBS (who cast my in my first pilot ever)… whew… out of breath.

Suffice to say I’m TREMENDOUSLY humbled and thankful for this opportunity. I will work my ass off to live up to the very understandable expectations this role accompanies. So let’s set our course and take engines to Warp factor 5. Engage!
