Spoilers Canon, Continuity, and Pike's Accident

In my opinion, the first few minutes of that film were the best minutes of Star Trek ever put into theaters, either before or since.
You know I enjoyed that opening quite a bit, but even though the rest of the movie is rather unwatchable, as far as Star Trek film opening scenes go, nothing beats the three Klingon Battle Cruisers vs V'Ger opening battle scenes from ST:TMP.:D

I have already discussed my thoughts on canon several times. But I will say the look of SNW is great. Except for the the size of the Enterprise ,(which I'm guessing is probably 25% larger than the original) I really like the aesthetics of the show and never expected the interiors or exteriors to look exactly the same as TOS. That said I'm not too crazy about some of the more major retcons they have done in regards to characters and some story points. Yes their are a lot of continuity errors and adjustments throughout Trek. Most minor. Though I really don't feel the animated series is canon. I thought originally it wasn't. Now everyone says it is. But I personally feel that DISCO and than SNW have really trampled TOS to where they may as well just remake TOS and than the TOS films. In which case they probably should have just left Discovery in it's original time....

Is it a different universe??? Alternate/altered prime universe??? or a created parallel universe like Kelvin???? Maybe. I doubt we will ever find out...

As for Pikes accident. We know that he eventually ends back at Talos. I'm thinking he will still end up on Talos. I would like to see the end of SNW show a reshoot of the last few minutes of the Menagerie showing Kirk completing their mission to take Pike there. THAN show a flash forward..(maybe around the time of Picard) .....of Talos and we see that Pike is still alive thanks to the Talosians. Then maybe have a story of him leaving Talos and get back to Starfleet. Of course the Talosians would have to had figured out how to repair Pikes body.

I would love to see Anson Mount continue to play Pike for another 15-20 years....

It originally was. Then Roddenberry's lawyers got involved (in the late 80's, 15 years later) and it wasn't. Then people died who cared and it was again. (This is probably speculation. But GR only cared about this stuff in two circumstances: When he wasn't getting paid and when someone else was getting paid. To a lesser extent when he wasn't getting credit and when someone else was getting credit.)

If you can have a series that is run by D.C. Fontana with episodes written by Gerrold, Kandell, Peoples, Daniels, ETC. and starring the original series cast (minus poor Walter, of course) and NOT call it "canon" then clearly I don't know what Star Trek is.

How so? SNW is the most Star Trek like Trek show that has ever Treked since Star Trek.

It isn't.

I don't want to have to type all the things they changed in SNW and Disco that I have in previous threads. It's just too much to go over...

That said I really like SNW...

Haha. Guys I'm not hating on the show. I'm just discussing the title of the thread. How come no one quoted my Pike stuff???? Good idea or not????

Ortegas: Yo Spock, subspace chatter's all talking about how they have a new hip retro interior designer in Starfleet, says he's going to cut down on resources and by the end of the decade our ships and refits will take a fraction of the time to do now, even if they end up looking like cardboard, since it saves on resorces and repair time.

Spock: Fascinating.

Has potential but to my mind that's less important then how Pike lives up until his accident. The follow up might be OK, but I prefer a coda rather than a full exploration of his life post-Talos.

True. The character has become so popular now I would think they might want to eventually explore what happened during and after his Talos stay. If it weren't for Anson Mounts excellent portrayal of the character I probably would not feel this way.lol He was actually the main draw for me when the show was announced. I was also a huge fan of Hell On Wheels.
They could even do a mini reunion with Anson and Colm....:D

One could go with Gene's idea that TOS is a fictional recreation for TMP.
That is my main view. We use retconning and nostalgia to cover over errors and discontinuities. But, the fact is TOS was the first and had a lot of ups and downs. It stands apart as it's own thing. Forcing others to be in perfect continuity is ignoring the variety that made TOS fun.
