On the origin of the "Gimmick Episode" in SNW...(Spoilers)

Here in the US, TNG was a hit out of the gate. Renewed for a second season six weeks after it debuted.
Yep. I remember at the time that while some TOS purists hated it, a great many loved it. TNG WAS helped by the fact it was first run syndication and the only competition it had was reruns, the local news and game shows.

My boys (all are adults now) generally wouldn't watch it unless they happened to be in the room with me. Both like sci-fi, the youngest even likes older sci-fi and horror. Won't touch Trek.

Which makes me wonder if Trek truly does have a future or if it is something that will die out as the youngest fans from the TNG-era die out.
In Ireland every Sunday after the sports the national broadcaster shows a Bond movie. They just keep the rotation going.

Trek isn't Bond but I couldn't see the movies having a Christmas holidays, Bank holiday appeal similar to Indiana Jones (unlike Star Wars which is notoriously never on TV) .Berman era TV shoes might be too dated for the kids though.

It aired at 8pm on Friday nights for its entire run, here in Cincinnati. Saw some stories where a few network affiliates were using the show to replace weaker network offerings.

And the fact that (in my market) a new episode of TNG was sandwiched between two TOS episodes, one before, and one after.

Just to verify, I did a google AI search for my region. The two hour pilot premiered on a Monday at 8pm, then the first run episodes aired Sundays at 7pm. I'm not sure what their competition would have been in that Sunday night timeslot.

Yes, the one thing that Lower Decks always got right was the heartwarming friendships between the characters. Somehow, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford have more well-developed camaraderie with one another than any other modern Trek, in spite of the short runtime. The series was actually better at portraying this than being funny.

I do think, however, that if there was a live-action Trek sitcom, it just wouldn't be able to get away with quite the level of goofiness that LDS did. Like people would be legit complaining that the black mountain and the koala were canonically part of Trek now.
I was just checking out IMDB and the SNW episode that had LD characters was one of the highest rated and most engaged episodes for the show.

i think the origins started in season 1 when spock and t pring switched places then they started doing it a bit more in season 2

but it was in season 3 that gimmick style star trek strange new worlds episodes became somewhat more common

I do remember a story where, if it failed early in its run that those thirteen produced episodes would be added to the syndication package. But not two seasons worth.

Yes. And before that, a memo sent out to fan clubs had said that 78 TOS and 22 TAS made the "magic 100" for a tempting syndication package.

If "Phase II" had happened on the then-proposed Paramount Network, and it only ran 13 episodes, Shatner would have completed his initial contract, departed to make non-Trek motion pictures, and the 13 episodes (or 26, with Commander Decker rising in rank for the second 13) would have been added for syndication with TOS.

Of course, the tricky bit was that most (all?) of Season Three was in the can before Season Two started streaming. All of Season Four was in the can before Season Three started streaming. All of Season Five is in the can... before Season Four started streaming.

And the fact that (in my market) a new episode of TNG was sandwiched between two TOS episodes, one before, and one after.

In Australia, Season One of TNG had "a two-year video holdback" so it could be released on rental VHS, two instalments per tape, and released monthly. So it took a whole year for us to get the end of that first season.

When the series was offered to Network Seven, who had the then-current replay rights for TOS and TAS, the executives rejected the offer, knowing that most Aussie fans had seen the episodes.

Diana Muldaur's "LA Law" episodes were airing here before Season Two of TNG was available to watch.

Yep. I had no problem when it was an episode or two a season. When it started growing beyond that was when it became a problem.

epsiode 8 is so far the 1st episode of season 4 in strange new worlds history to be a star trek style episode

in other words season 4 epsiode 8 is so far the only episode in season 4 of strange new worlds to be a non gimmick style star trek episode but a pure star trek style episode

I haven't seen it yet, but based on the comments about the episode, it sounds like it will be a lower rung episode for me. I've been enjoying SNW leaning into other formats and forging what are, for it, a sense of "originality".

there was no gimmicks in episode 8

Honest suggestion: if anyone has really been enjoying the gimmick episodes in Strange New Worlds I'd suggest checking out the TV series DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Because that's where it stole all its ideas from :p

Seriously, it has characters turned into puppets, it has a musical, it has a sitcom episode, it has a documentary, it has dinosaurs. And it's about a crew of loveable heroes on a spaceship who keep getting into weird love triangles. I love it, it's one of my favourite series of the last few years, so it's a genuine recommend.

No thank you.

Not a fan of DC.

It was a fun show.
