Anyone still build models?

Building physical models is something I loved to do as a kid and teenager.

I recently decided that I needed a “fun” project that had no-one to answer to, and no practical purpose whatsoever. So I went down to the hobby shop and bought a USS Kelvin model.

And then I thought how much more fun it would be to build the model as if it were from the Forbidden Planet era. Nice and smooth. United Planets Cruiser C-517 coming soon…

That sounds like a fun build! Can't wait to see it.

There are models—and then, there’s this

Paint colour and aztec test on the 1/1000 NX-01.

I would love a 1:537 Excelsior. But I doubt Round 2/Polar Lights or whoever currently has the license for Star Trek model kits will ever release one. It seems to be either 1:350 or 1:1000 these days.

Yeah, I'm still holding out hope for a larger scale SNW Enterprise. Something like 1/537 would make it comparable to the big 1/350 kits.

Question/ Opinions

If you didn't know there was a wire, would you notice it?

I'm going to go against what the others are saying. Yes, I'd notice *something* was amiss there, only because my eyes are now drawn to the asymmetry of it all. If you added the same detail to the other side, then I'd answer no, I wouldn't notice the wire.

Thanks for the honesty. I'll still probably leave it as is. The kit is so small that I don't think anyone would notice once it's linked up with the rest of the ship.

Plus, it's just a test mule for something much bigger.

I wound up doing the exact same thing you did many years ago with the AMT/ERTL E-D kit. Needed to get lighting wires up to the warp engines via the pylons, which are very curved and very solid - not at all conducive to drilling straight-line conduits through which to put tiny wires, so I laid down a strip of super-thin lined styrene on each pylon, which were cut to generally match the surface texturing of the part in that area on top, and placed the wires on either side of it, out the back of the top half of the stardrive piece and up into the bottom of the nacelles. It just looked like some raised detailing that worked perfectly for many years... until the model took a dive off my shelf when I was trying to move it carefully (operative word, "trying") and...well... y'know how those things go... Lost my old ERTL K'T'inga to a similar fate a couple of years ago.

Further experiments with trying to get the warm metal colour tones for the NX-01. I plan to do a more accurate aztec patern on my upcoming 1/350 NX-01 build, but I want to get the colours just right. I've always loved the NX-01, so I want to really try and do it justice. Plus, the kit was gifted to me during a time when I was feeling very down on myself, and it really helped bring me out of that funk. So I really want to knock it outta the park.

I think you nailed the color. Once you’ve finished this one, you should do the NX-02 with the “cooler” color tones and squared-off deflector and glue their keels together. :D

Don't tempt me. I've thought about doing a whole fleet of slightly different NX Class ships. But once I finish this 1/1000 scale, and then finish my 1/350 scale, I think I might take a break from Starfleet ships for a bit. I enjoyed the different colour pallet of DS9 and I've got a 1/350 Bird of Prey kit in my backlog. Might be time for some dirty green.

Speaking of models, there has been another discovery involving a model missing even longer than the three-footer:

I wonder if the mixture here might be a good way to set nacelle pylons:

Position nacelle struts just so—fill with goo…and lock it in.

Nice prop

Been fairly busy lately, so progress has been slow, but here's a little update on my 1/1000 NX-01 test mule.

Pretty happy with my colour mix, though I think I'll go a little lighter on the darker shade when I finally start the 1/350. I managed to score a set of paint masks fit the 1/350, so she'll have a far more accurate aztec pattern.
