Reasoned criticism is great. Hand-waving absolutes like "I don't do reboots" don't do much for the quality of discourse.

TMP has an explanation for why the ship looks different.
It's explained in dialogue.

We do not know WHAT the 1701 actually looks like in the actual film. We have some visual ques from the trailer; and I do not understand how anyone can say it doesn't look like the 1701 from the TV series. It has the distinctive primary hull (which DOESN'T look like the TMP version, but does look like the TV version); and we have two large, round nacelles, and 'spinning' bussard collectors. Looks more like the TV series version than anything else.

The look may indeed be explained in dialogue; BUT since the film has yet to be released, we don't know yet. I suppose a better question would be - "How did you feel about the TMP 1701 refit design BEFORE you saw Star Trek: TMP?

I don't want to watch some dark, humorless movie.

Since when has JJ Abrams presented anything as dark and humorless?

I was excited when the project was announced, and getting more exciting every day.

I 'm quite happy with the look of the Enterprise and the whole thing that has been done so far. I know some people will always bash at something in the movie, direction, design, music, but, what can we do ? Nothing !

at least, there's something for all of us that is coming in december and it's called Star trek. for the first time in years, I'll be able to watch something new in my local theater with a smile on my face because this will be made with new blood, new ideas, new direction. and again, this is the 21st century. we should expect some changes. I'm pretty glad of it !

The fact the movie tells us this is the original, that should be enough...

I'm sorry, but Abrams word isn't gospel to me.

But if Berman said he was making a new Star Trek and he said "This will be a great film, trust me", It is my opinion that you would either believe him or give him the benefit of the doubt, even though his regime made only two (some argue only one) good films in four tries, and his last two TV series had nothing new to offer to a stale franchise.

If you would (as I suspect) give Berman with his track record the benefit of the doubt, why not extend the same courtesy to Abrams?

There is no onscreen explaination about why the Klingons look different or how eveyone's aged 10 years when the film supposedly takes place 2.5 years after the five year mission.

;)

If the movie was ABOUT klingons, THEN they would have needed to address it IMO. As was, it wasn't significant.

Though to me, the way to make TMP work (yeah, another one) would have been to do it as a JOINT UFP/Kling mission, that way you'd have some significant character interaction and pyrotechnics before you get into all the other stuff.

Then again, I think TUC would have worked better if it was about the E and the Kronos ship being forced to work together to fight off a lot of other ships on the way to earth, maybe with Kirk alone on the burning bridge of the Enterprise as he sends it smashing into spacedock to let the Chancellor reach Earth to give his address. Totally different movie, but that's what I'd've hoped to see (I really really HATE that spacedock!)

Plenty of folks on the OTHER side of the argument seem to be limited to doing one-sentence snipes and dismissals of posters with dissenting views, and they get away with it endlessly and have for YEARS here. 'reasoned criticism' seems defined here often enough by who you know, otherwise there'd be admirals on permanent suspension for their constant trolling.

This forum is disappointing me more than anything. I'm seriously considering avoiding it for the next few months because it's killing my spirit.

If you think that the LOOK of Star Trek is set in stone and that the look is very important to the fabric of the show, then you will probably consider this a reboot.

However, if you think that the look isn't that important (as long as for instance the Enterprise is still basically recognizable), but the TONE, FEEL, characters traits and character relationships are what is important to Star Trek, then you can be a little encouraged by what the creative team has said so far -- and you would probably consider this (so far, at least) an in-universe prequel.

Amen to that. You took the words right out of my mouth. I don't understand why people can't be more open-minded regarding the visual changes we've seen. It's about the STORIES, people!

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

I am cautiously optimistic about this film. While I would have liked to see the original grey lady on the big screen I am open to them changing the design. They did it in TMP and the refit is a fantastic looking ship.

As to whether it is a prequel or a reboot a la "Battle Trek: Enterprise", this is something that does concern me. Im' okay with a reboot as long as it stays true to the original principles Gene Roddenberry laid down for Star Trek. If people want to see so called gritty realistic sci-fi then they can go watch nBSG.

I seem to remember Ron Moore commenting on this a year or two ago. He said something along the line that Star Trek is not nBSG and never should be. Star Trek has a universe to itself.

Maybe.
But if there aren't MORE people who like Star Trek then there won't be any new Star Trek.

So you think I should be grateful for any new Trek, huh?

No, not any Trek. Good Star Trek.
We just have to wait for this film to hit the cinemas to judge for ourselves if it is good Trek or not.
To judge this film now, just by the look of a TEASER that doesn't tell us anything about about the story and a few unconfirmed rumors is stupid. Wouldn't you agree?

I should just take whatever they throw at me ?
If more Trek fans had that attitude, Enterprise would be in it's 7th season by now.

Since Enterprise was changing for the better, I can't see why that would have been so bad... except for... we wouldn't get this new movie now.

No one is 'praising' him (since we know next to nothing about the new film).

^^So in your opinion it's a reboot...Get a tub-o-porcorn, grab a ginormous Cherry Coke™, suspend disbelief, sit back and enjoy the show.

IF it's a good film, then it's a good film -- rebo
ot or not.

I don't do reboots.
So you skipped Batman Begins and Casino Royale? Shame you missed two good movies. Both reboots and both very good ones that don't take away from earlier versions. In fact they may be better than earlier versions.

No, but in 11 months it will be canon.

It looks different because Gene (et al) had the money and technology to redesign the ship. The new Enterprise BETTER look different. It's 2008, not 1966. I don't want to see a "lost episode" of STAR TREK (1966). I want to see something made NOW (2008).
