Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks etc

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

Spock : Have we've become so old and inflexable that we have outlived our usefulness ? Would that consitue as a joke ?

As far as some Star Trek fans go, I see that this quote fits perfectly with what's happening with Star Trek.

Some fans seem to be afraid of change, to move forward, to stay stuck in the past, to be just like Spock said above.

I know if we don't move forward with what's happening with Star Trek we will be replaced by new fans, do fans WANT to be replaced because of change ? I know I don't want that.

Anyone disappointed with what we've seen so far, i.e. next to nothing, needs to get over themselves.

Best. Post. Ever.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

^ I was thinking of what quote best fits with the current situation, that was the first one that came to me.

It fits because 1. It's from Star Trek itself and 2. Spock is the one that says it, almost as if he's speaking directly to the fans in the future when it come to Star Trek itself changeing.

Most ludicrous post ever is more like it. Fans have a fear of being replaced by new fans? HUHHH??? What, are they 'pod' fans, stepford fans? Being a fan must be an occupation with you, to be so concerned about it.

You think somebody who objects to stuff they think is being done wrong is out of line, but in the same post you're reverse-IDICiing like mad, afraid somebody else might be able to appreciate new trek more than you. Well, hey, if they like it, SO THE HELL WHAT? Either it shows they have no taste or (if it is actually any good), that they do have taste, but it shouldn't affect your appreciation (or 'standing' as a fan) in the slightest.

^ Uhm, it's a metaphor ^

You do know what a metaphor is, right ?

Can we move on please.

Do you think your definition of metaphor is so old and inflexible that it has outlived its usefulness? Oh, you didn't give one?

That must constitute a joke, right?

Move along home.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

^ The quote was reffering to older Star Trek Fans who seem to think that if it doen't look 100% like it did in 1966 that there's something wrong.

No way would the 1966 FX fly with the "Unwashed masses" they are aiming this film at, nore would the sets from then as well, we're talking about the same people who ploped down $10 for POTC, LOTR & so on, all modern films done with modern FX and modern sets.

To suddenly throw something as "carbord and blinking lights" at them and expect them to take it seriously is asking for dissappointment and roars of laughter.

You do know how hard it is being a Star Trek fan and people keep reminding you how "Cheesy" and "Cornball" it is next to modern film design, sets and FX ?

It might have been okay when I was a kid, but i'm in my 40's now, I feel embearased to BE a Star Trek fan becuse it has for the most part stayed stuck or atatched to that time period, now it's being updated for 2008 !

I feel proud that we're getting a Star Trek that looks just as good as every other Sci-Fi / Fantasy film that's come along recently, I for one don't want to stay in the 1960's forever as much as I like the old show, it's not something everyone like as much as I do or any other fan does.

Mostly in part because it does look dated, out of step with modern film makeing, part of it is Star Trek's own fault for pushing FX tech back in the day, no one had ever done that level of FX work on TV untill then.

FX tech kept going forward, to the point when Star Trek returned it looked radically different then before, yet I was able to live with it, as were many others, and here we are again, a big budget event Star Trek film, it feel like 1979 all over again, same arguments even, i'm sure.

BUT don't let my feeling get in the way of you hateing the new film, go right ahead, continue to hate it for no real good reason other then it's different, like a bastard child, like the later movies and series were treated by fans, let's keep destroying Star Trek with our pettyness.

If you're in your 40s and you're insecure to the point where you feel embarrassment over a TV/movie franchise, I suggest you have some issues you need to work out.

"Deserve" suggests some level of obligation here, either on our part or Paramount's, i.e. "the fans deserve better than this." We are not obligated to watch if it sucks, and Paramount is not obligated to produce new material if the ratings/ticket sales sink so low as to be no longer worthy of further investment.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

^ SIGH ! ^
Do I have to make super long winded post to get my point across ?

As something I enjoy a lot, it saddens me to see folks make fun of it simply because it is what it is, a product of a simpler time, it's nastalga creeping in that's all.

Everyone has feelings about nastalga, right, i'm not alone in this am I ? Like reading an old book or watching old cartoons or whatever have you.

I do relise that nastaga while all nice and warm and fuzzy, shouldn't be the end all and be all, that we should look forward to the new.

Blah, i'm no good with words, this be much easyer to do face to face and not over the internet, as it's hard to put into words what i'm trying to say here.

Actually, yes, some do.

In 1980, I entered fandom after TMP and, within a very short time, I was president of a fan club that had been running since 1972.

My friends and I were called "newbies" - until the next wave of newbies who turned up after ST IV and TNG - and we were often told by disgruntled members of the old guard TOS fans that ST fandom was wonderful 'til all the newbies came and wrecked it for them.

We made life difficult. Meetings got so big we could no longer use members' lounge rooms. We needed more than one bottle of Coke and a packet of cookies to feed everyone. And then the new kids wanted to see the new-fangled Beta videotapes at meetings! And so on.

I agree. The only deriding I ever get from non ST fans is in the form of gentle teasing, and it's no more or less than the teasing people do of stamp collectors, football fans, girls who love ponies, and politicians who cheat on their wives and get caught.

Most people, whether they like Star Trek or not, have an awareness of it and recognise that it's a successful franchise... that waxes and wanes in acceptance by the general public. Like any fad.

The fact that its popularity is cyclic, and that it has risen from obscurity several times now (TOS in 70s prime time syndication; TMP; ST IV; TNG Seasons 3-7; "First Contact"), ST is quite well respected, even though people do love to scoff at its success.

Shrug it off and be proud.

^ I'm guessing none of you were beat up as Kids for being a Star Trek fan, I was, okay, need I say more ?

* Happy now ? *

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

I'm not disappointed with what I'm seeing so far. But quite frankly, I'm not looking very hard. I'm doing my best to avoid spoilers so I can go into the theater and be surprised and judge the film on its own merits, not what I thought it might be like. It's going to be a long wait until Christmas.

Kids get bullied for 1000s of supposed reasons. So do adults.

But you weren't bashed because you were a Star Trek fan, it was because some bully needed to point out a power imbalance. He could have chosen your red hair, your daggy shoes, your mother's divorce, or your chess knowledge.

I never got bashed for liking a TV show, but I was hopeless at sport. Walking target! Once it was supposedly because a kid told the bully we looked similar. Another time it was because my mother made me wear Brylcreem in my hair every day.

The important thing is to have a support network who can help you make the bully realise he was wrong. Easier said than done, sure, but it's nothing to do with a passion for Star Trek.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

^ This was back in the 1970's ! ^

There were no such thing as support groups back then !

Fuck, why do I even bother tell you people this stuff ?

You don't give a rats ass about what crap I went through.

You just want to hate anyone who doesn't agree with you.

I'm done with you people, all you know is hate, hate, hate.

You don't want JJ's Trek, you hate it, with a passion.

You hate anyone who thinks it's a good idea.

Hate, hate, hate, hate, guess i'm too much fo an optimist, I should be cynical about Star trek, it's the IN thing now.

Everyone's doing it, why should I be any diffrent ?

No more Star Trek !
No more Star Trek fans !
Let all of it die out once and for all.

I'm 49, my friend. I was being bullied in the 60s and 70s right along with you.

There were indeed support networks in the 70s. I'm talking about the informal support networks that everyone must make and maintain, in order to survive in the world. You have one informal friendship network right here.

I'm willing to bet that almost everyone on this list has been bullied at some time in their lives. If they're being truthful, almost everyone has also been a bully at some time in their lives.

And you're yelling at probably the world's most optimistic Star Trek fan right here. ;)

Everyone's entitled to their opinions about this movie. However, the ones who feel a need to air unnecessary doom and gloom so early, a year before its release, risk feeling very silly when/if it's a hit.
