Sequels or prequels don't me. "Reboots" do.

Every things "recycled", not excluding every last story ever told on Trek as I think was brought up in another thread.

Originality is in execution not premise, but I can assure this production is going to set a high standard for any new Trek production to follow it and make its own positive mark on how Star Trek is defined.

Moving ahead in a timeline and simply sticking a random group on a ship isn't in and of itself creative.

Yeah, someone using someone elses characters is soooooooooo creative. I could have done that myself, and I'm not even a professional.

Yes, but could you have done it well? There's a huge difference.

And, honestly, a sequel/prequel is just as recycled (or not) as a reboot/reimagining would be. If you want to see something "new" the 11th Star Trek movie probably isn't the place to see it.

You don't plan to criticize me now for not falling in line and praising everything that Abrams does now do you?

How could I... since we don't actually know what he is doing...

I think it's pretty clear from the trailer what Abrams is intending to do.

What? Other than that the film is 'under construction'?

I am. After that encouraging news about Orci acknowledging Enteprise, I broke down and watched the trailer. There is no way that this movie is NOT a reboot. Nice try, Bob.
The question of whether this is a reboot or a prequel depends on your point-of-view coming in:

If you think that the LOOK of Star Trek is set in stone and that the look is very important to the fabric of the show, then you will probably consider this a reboot.

However, if you think that the look isn't that important (as long as for instance the Enterprise is still basically recognizable), but the TONE, FEEL, characters traits and character relationships are what is important to Star Trek, then you can be a little encouraged by what the creative team has said so far -- and you would probably consider this (so far, at least) an in-universe prequel.

I usually don't nitpick minor visual discontinuities, like rank pips missing in one scene and being their in the next. The look of this new ship is a different matter altogether.
It's kind of hard to swallow that this is supposed to be the same Enterprise we saw in the 60's show. How can this movie not be a reboot?

Then you must hate TMP...

You know, you are exactly] right. From the teaser, there is no doubt in my mind that we're going to get... 2 FULL HOURS OF WELDING! Weee! :vulcan:

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

TMP has an explanation for why the ship looks different.
It's explained in dialogue.

So in your opinion it's a reboot...Get a tub-o-porcorn, grab a ginormous Cherry Coke™, suspend disbelief, sit back and enjoy the show.

IF it's a good film, then it's a good film -- reboot or not.

Oh please. The modern series didn't recycle TOS.
They used their own characters. That's still brand new within the context of Trek.

There is no onscreen explaination about why the Klingons look different or how eveyone's aged 10 years when the film supposedly takes place 2.5 years after the five year mission.

;)

You know as well as I do that if the 1960's ship was in the teaser that Joe 6 Pack would laugh his butt off at us.

You want the mainstream to continue to make fun of Star Trek fans ?

I'm not too concerned with what the "mainstream" thinks.
If people don't like Star Trek, then that's their perogative.

Me too.
We should get that other guy who liked it too and share a good bottle of red wine ;)

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

Why would anyone want a return of the original enterprise exact? It was made under a 1960s TV Budget, probably hampered by limitations in the design processes of the time.

When Gene was given a bigger budget, did he keep the Enterprise the same with more details, no, he re-designed and made use of the budget given to him, and if he was alive now, is there any doubt he would re-design again.

The fact the movie tells us this is the original, that should be enough...

Maybe.
But if there aren't MORE people who like Star Trek then there won't be any new Star Trek.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

So you're fine with the Media turning it's nose up at us ?
Continue to believe that we need to 'get a life'....
Continue to think we live in our parents basements.....
Continue to think we're a joke....

I'm sorry, but Abrams word isn't gospel to me.

So you think I should be grateful for any new Trek, huh?
I should just take whatever they throw at me ?
If more Trek fans had that attitude, Enterprise would be in it's 7th season by now.
