^^ what I find hard to believe is that it seems there are people who EXPECED the Enterprise to look exactly like the 1960s design and seem genuinely shocked that it doesn't( not on this board, but I have seen this reaction on other boards), even months after the creative team confirmed that this will have a "different visual astheic".

I am. After ] that encouraging news about Orci acknowledging Enteprise, I broke down and watched the trailer. There is no way that this movie is NOT a reboot. Nice try, Bob.

Sequels or prequels don't me. "Reboots" do.

You don't plan to criticize me now for not falling in line and praising everything that Abrams does now do you?

Every things "recycled", not excluding every last story ever told on Trek as I think was brought up in another thread.
Originality is in execution not premise, but I can assure this production is going to set a high standard for any new Trek production to follow it and make its own positive mark on how Star Trek is defined.
Moving ahead in a timeline and simply sticking a random group on a ship isn't in and of itself creative.

How could I... since we don't actually know what he is doing...
The question of whether this is a reboot or a prequel depends on your point-of-view coming in:MattJC said:

If you think that the LOOK of Star Trek is set in stone and that the look is very important to the fabric of the show, then you will probably consider this a reboot.
However, if you think that the look isn't that important (as long as for instance the Enterprise is still basically recognizable), but the TONE, FEEL, characters traits and character relationships are what is important to Star Trek, then you can be a little encouraged by what the creative team has said so far -- and you would probably consider this (so far, at least) an in-universe prequel.
