Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks etc

I'm not too concerned with what the "mainstream" thinks.
If people don't like Star Trek, then that's their perogative.
Well, I consider myself a mainstream movie-goer (I see several per year, various genres), and I LOVE TOS (I was rasied on TOS reruns in the 1970s), and I think I may like Abrams 21st century take on that classic TV show...

...Does that make me a freak of nature, or am I just normal (I've alway felt normal before)

I'm sorry, but Abrams word isn't gospel to me.

Neither is it to me, but surely it is the story and events which dictate canon and the premise, not the look. The fact the film is based on the premise of this being the Enterprise Kirk first commanded, should be enough for you to know that is the case. If you cant suspend belief on something so basic, then what do you get out of sci-fi?

Somehow I doubt, this movie is going to change that.

We should get that other guy who liked it too and share a good bottle of red wine ;)
I'm right here

If more Trek fans had that attitude, Enterprise would be in it's 7th season by now.

Yeah its a shame a pile of crap like Voyager gets 7 seasons and Enterprise is cancelled after 4 :(

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

An unfortunate issue you know have to accept and deal with MattJC is that there are a significantly more hours of TNG than there is TOS, and when you add in DS9 and VOY and the TNG Films, well you see where I am going. Just because you grew up with TOS or you prefer TOS, doesn't make you more of a fan, or a better fan, and doesn't mean your views are more important, especially to us fans of TREK who started with TNG and beyond.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

ENT never should have gone past "Broken Bow".

ENT was a reboot.

It used DS9's mark 1 Starfleet casual duty uniform, The Defiant bridge, and the bumpy headed Klingons.

The communicators, and tricorders are too small for ENT's era.

"In The Mirror Darkly" has a Constitution Class starship that doesn't look like the 1960's one.

Star Trek has used dark, and CGI before.

The Star Trek XI Enterprise design is what the Enterprise was supposed to have looked like since 1964.

Do you want Spock do be an emotionally red skinned Martian? Do you want James Kirk to have an middle inital of R?

No?

Than that is a violation of C A N O N tm.

Do you want the female starfleet officers to be wearing mini dresses?

Yes?

Than that is a violation of C A N O N tm.

Star Trek's gonna become a popular cultural icon again, despite what the naysayers seem to want. It may not "in" to be an obsessive fan (there's no reason that ever should be popular), clued to every detail after this film sweeps in...

But it will be "in" to have seen this latest blockbuster that just happens to be named "Star Trek" and it'll become part of the cultural awareness in a whole new fashion.

Sequels or prequels don't me. "Reboots" do.

Every things "recycled", not excluding every last story ever told on Trek as I think was brought up in another thread.

Originality is in execution not premise, but I can assure this production is going to set a high standard for any new Trek production to follow it and make its own positive mark on how Star Trek is defined.

Moving ahead in a timeline and simply sticking a random group on a ship isn't in and of itself creative.

Yeah, someone using someone elses characters is soooooooooo creative. I could have done that myself, and I'm not even a professional.

Yes, but could you have done it well? There's a huge difference.

And, honestly, a sequel/prequel is just as recycled (or not) as a reboot/reimagining would be. If you want to see something "new" the 11th Star Trek movie probably isn't the place to see it.

Oh please. The modern series didn't recycle TOS.
They used their own characters. That's still brand new within the context of Trek.

A multi-cultural crew on the Starship Enterprise exploring where nobody has gone before. Sounds pretty recycled to me.

And don't make me mention "The Naked Now"

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

What I don't understand is, this new film doesn't suddenly erase all 3 Series of TOS, surely all it can do is add to it?

To me, being a TNG, DS9, VOY fan, I am looking forward to a modern take on the origins of TOS, because I am too young to 'appreciate' the aesthetic which I cant see beyond the low quality (by today's standards) sets, costumes, makeup, model work. At least the films don't seem as dated to me, probably because of the budget, the quality of the model work (The Enterprise refit is a beauty) and the fact it is self contained, without commercials, or idents or station IDs.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

EVERY incarnation of Star Trek re-hashed the character of Spock:

TNG: Data (Blatantly)
DS9: Odo (Less Blatantly)
VOY: Seven
ENT: T'Pol

^^So in your opinion it's a reboot...Get a tub-o-porcorn, grab a ginormous Cherry Coke™, suspend disbelief, sit back and enjoy the show.

IF it's a good film, then it's a good film -- rebo
ot or not.

I don't do reboots.

Well that all and fine. My advice is dont sweat it. Just move on. Trek for you is now finished. Which may be a good or bad thing. No matter how hard you wish Trek is never going to go back to the TOS look, full time anyways. DS9 and Enterprise gave us tastes of old Trek as well as New Voyages. But these were all small scale. The visual continuity really should be the least of concern or worries.

TNG was a recyle of TOS and TMP with a little Questor thrown in. Decker/Riker. Troi/Ilia. Data was one part Questor and one part IliaProbe with a reverse Spock for good measure.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

I don't care if its a prequel, sequel, reboot, re-imagining or a pre-imagining. As long as its a good movie & feels like Star Trek in spirit, I'm a happy camper

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

^^ I say if it feels like Star Trek in spirit, then it isn't a re-anything...It's just Star Trek with different actors and a new art director/set designer.

Yeah, I never noticed that opinion before.

Re: Anyone else feeling disappointed with the look, leaks et

So, it's alright for people to keep on praising Abrams, but no dissention is allowed?
