‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed for Fifth and Final Season

Why didn't they continue PIC with Legacy?
I think the problem with Legacy was that the most appealing thing about it was the potential guest stars (TNG, DS9, VOY characters). With the focus on TNG sendoff the supposed main characters for Legacy were not strong enough. Raffi, Picard's son and Geordi's daughter were not appealing enough and 7of9 probably works better as a supporting character than the lead character.

Either way, I want the next series to be Phase II. Convert the SNW sets into an approximation of the TMP sets, lets go!

YASSS!!!! I've been saying that for a couple years now!!! Basically since we already have seen TOS and the five year mission (or at least most of it) we just need a time jump of a few more years to continue the adventures with the movie refit Enterprise. There are a further 15 years of untapped lore between TMP and TWOK (you could fit three whole SNW's series length into that timeframe) and God knows how many epic stories with Kirk, Spock, and the classic crew in the prime timeline aboard the refit NCC-1701. The possibilities are damn near endless!

Or, let's turn SNW's conclusion into an Enterprise episode, and give them back the finale that was stolen from them! They can rebuild all the old sets, have everyone in the same ranks 20 years later, it'll be a valentine to the fans.
Starring the visibly older Trinneer and Keating.

I think its only around 7 years (15 between Space Seed and TWOK, 4-5 years of the mission, 2-3 in spacedock, and then 7-9 years left unexplored.) But quite a lot of time for good stories. I'd have to assume something major happened to put Kirk back behind the desk and militarize Star Fleet and amp up tensions with the Klingons, so I'd love to see how it all came to a head.

IMO, it would be worth it just to see the Refit ship on the screen longer than we actually got.

Its still a solid core, throw in Data's daughter, a few other characters that might be legacy characters (even to bit characters) or just random new characters, and call it a good day. But, thats why offing Shaw was shortsighted. He could have added a needed dynamic there.

I mean, it's not like many have wanted to see Trek movies anyway. In terms of ticket sales, only three have lit the box office on fire, TMP, TVH and XI.

You left out Star Trek 2, which grossed an impressive $97mil after a $12mil budget and Star Trek 3 grossed $87mil after a $16mil budget. Even though they weren't "killer box office" films, the budgets were low enough that they were considered hits by the studio. People were still seeing them, not just Trek fans, but the first real crossover hit was certainly TVH. But TWOK was the six highest grossing film in 1982. TSFS was at #8 in domestic BO in 1984. Ticket sales were very healthy for the era. Not ET or Star Wars level, but the initial success of the film series was common knowledge then.

Until TNG put Star Trek back in their lives weekly with and Star Trek V ruined the streak from which it didn't recover except sporadically, people were certainly coming out to see the movies.

That's still my point. TNG had better effects than Star Trek V and on par with VI, was on TV weekly with often compelling stories. The hunger to see Trek in theaters waned. TFF didn't help, but TUC was strong and the domestic BO was still flabby. People had the Enterprise D for free every week, they didn't need the A so much anymore.

Counting 2 parters as 2, no matter how they aired, and counting The Cage as an episode:

TOS: 80 (+6 movies)
TAS: 22
--------102 Total--------
TNG: 178 (+4 movies)
DS9: 176
VOY: 172
ENT: 98
------624 total----------
Kelvin: 3 movies
DISCO: 65 (+ 1 TV movie offshoot)
ST: 10
PIC: 30
LD: 50
PRO: 40
SNW: 46
----------241 total--------

TV: 102 + 624 + 241 = 967
Movies: 6 + 4 + 3 + 1 = 14.
------------
981. Looks like Academy S2 will put them over 1,000 entries. Someone check my math.

Seeing this list convinces me more than ever that Trek needs a rest. A real rest. Like 10-20 years. Not 3 or 4 years. 😂

How about the next series not deal with any legacy characters?

Maybe do a series set in the mid-25th century or even 26th?

I’d prefer a minor continuation of the DS9 and Voyager casts (alongside newer characters and stories with a heftier weight to them by comparison) more than anything, but I would gladly take your idea over a TOS retread, or a Phase II series. Like, genuinely gladly. A fresh start is probably the way to go.

It’s a bit hypocritical of me to stamp my foot down against more post-SNW fare whilst simultaneously being “part of the problem” on slavish adherence to the characters and galactic political angles which I grew up with. I know that full well. But the TOS era, taken on its own, has never done a ton for me.

Strange New Worlds rocks, though.

I would agree. Jack Crusher and Geordi's daughter simply are not compelling characters. Jack is a complete black mark in terms of Starfleet officer. In terms of Seven I like her well enough, but would not tune in for it because her as captain doesn't sound very enjoyable.

On this I will agree (save the emoji). Star Trek needs a break to give people something else to go find to complain about.

It's when people stop complaining that you have a problem, as it means that they don't care anymore.
I will simply disagree. The preference towards complaining is simply not in my interest any more. I'd rather people stop caring.

No one seems to have any positivity anymore. "Strange New Worlds isn't canon!" and now "I can't believe Strange New Worlds is cancelled! How dare they! Paramount hates Star Trek and fans!"*

*hyperbole.

I've seen a huge amount of positivity here for Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, Lower Decks and Picard season 3. There are always going to be people who dislike something about the new shows, but they wouldn't be here criticising them if they didn't love the franchise.

They'd be making videos on YouTube for money instead.

Then maybe I'm not just talking about here.

Love of the franchise has become a tired excuse to me. I'm not talking about criticism but complaining.
