Spock: FUUUUUUUCK!


Still might have been a pretty shocking moment though, especially for Spock.

 

He's supposed to have a mind like a computer and work everything out logically so spock should've screamed NEROOOOO!!!! as he's the one who was really responsible.

 

This is how I believe he should have worked the scene. I think it would have been much more powerful if he uttered the line in a low, seething growl, then erupted to chase after Khan.

I didn't laugh, though.

It worked for me, and I consider it a VERY ballsy move.

For me that Kirk scream is one of the worst and most embarrassing things in Trek (I know there have been worse) because it has been the only thing magnified so much in pop culture.

But the context fit better, the reason for it was better, and I though the jump cut mixed with the "scream" of Khan's ship zipping past the Enterprise was fucking awesome!

Sure it was a nod to TWOK as was the Kirk death scene, but it wasn't just in there to be there, both served a purpose and the purpose wasn't ripping off TWOK, the scenes were used completely differently and worked with the context of the movie.

Maybe this reuse of an idea is more on the nose than usual, but if you are a Trek fan you should know by now that Trek has been ripping off Trek's ideas for a long time. I've lost count of how many times they've covered a similar theme but in a slightly different concept.

I'm not sure what's laughable, the actual Khan yell or hardcore fans pretending to act confused over those who laughed at it or didn't like it. I kid, like what you want. Me, personally... I literally winced when it happened. Such a bad decision and it was totally unnecessary. Despite replaying TWOK, Pine and Quinto were actually doing a pretty fine job, especially Pine's "I'm scared". For a moment the film was actually grabbing me, but then the yell threw it right out the window. For a reboot that was supposed to take a bold new direction for the film series, this felt like a big step backward. The writers may have intended it to be a homage to TWOK, but instead it comes off flat and desperate. It reminds me of how SUPERMAN RETURNS tried to recapture what Donner brought in his films by recycling dialogue, thinking it might charm people.

Hopefully the criticisms of stuff like this at least encourages Orci to try to strive for something new instead of looking to the past.

 

Which is why they should have more experienced officers in key positions, such as Lieutenant Kyle manning the transporters instead of some teenager who should still be an Academy freshman.

 

Because it is a God-damned movie and Yelchin is one of the secondary stars. It isn't the fucking real life military. I was able to figure out how movies work when I was watching as a kid in the 1970's.

 

There was also interference after the Vengeance crashed, blocking incoming signals.

 

Yep, I sometimes wonder whether compulsion with irrelevant minutiae is an impediment to just sitting down and enjoying a film on pure entertainment value.

 

If only it had entertainment value (yeah yeah, I know, box office hit, rotten tomatoes, average joes).

I felt entertained. Sorry if you didn't. That happens. There are those who post here who think TMP is a work of art. I'm hardly one of them, but that's he way it goes.

This is probably been said by others many times, but no one is trying to say STID didn't have detractors, only that they seem to be outnumbered fairly significantly by those who were largely positive about the movie (you know, box office hit, Rotten Tomatoes, average Joes). By most indications that are used to measure success, the movie was well-received.

I will say it would be hard to look forward to a movie for so long and then be disappointed by it. That's kind of how I felt about TMP. Not a flop, but not what I was expecting, either.

 

I noticed another nod to TWOK when watching STID again the other day. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy discussing something when Spock mentions logic. Then McCoy has a line that nearly gets lost in overlapping dialogue, along the lines of "Logic! My God, the man's talking about logic! We're talking--"

 

Naturally.

 

I cringed at the theater. Now I think it sets up the Vengeance flyby quite nicely.

 

It's not my style to laugh when bad things happen to innocent people
I mean Zachary Quinto. I hope they did the scene no more than once for the sake of his poor vocal cords...

to this day I still don't get why they put it there, honestly. Perhaps to wake up those who inevitably fall asleep during the movies? It's like first they try to make the audience cry and then they abruptly pull you out of the drama

I laughed later, though, thinking about the fans that called Spock out of character in the first movie because he cared for mommy and kissed his girlfriend...

 

It would have been more effective if Spock had just whispered "No."

 

I don't have a problem with the principle of Spock yelling Khan because it was a gift by Abrams for us fans (whether you wanted that gift or not).
I have a problem with Spock being that affected by Kirk's death.
Were they best friends at that stage? Were they even friends at all? By watching the rest of the film and not knowing anything about TOS kirk and Spock I would say No.
