he also does not put uhura on the right ship even though he knew she was right for the job on the enterprise.

Kirk and spock where friends but I would not call them, best friends in STID, If kirk wanted to have a serious personal talk with someone as a friend and confidant, it would have been Bones and not Spock. Bones was his best friends, they perhaps even shared the same dorms together and have known each other longer than they have known Spock.

My personal opinion is that they rushed the kirk and spock friendship. the writers tried too hard with their friendship this is proven by the remake of spock's death in wrath of khan.

In ST09 Spock Prime told Spock about the potential future he could have with Kirk. He told Spock they needed each other. He told him about not depriving him of the revelation of what Kirk and Spock could accomplish together, and the friendship that would define them both in ways he can't yet realize. You think Spock forgot that? You think after one year together he didn't see that it could all come true in the fullness of time?

So, there's Kirk lying before him dead, only one year into that relationship that was meant for great things. Spock not only lost his past (Vulcan), he's now lost his future. What's he supposed to do, just mutter, "Well, crap. This sucks," and move on?

Sure there a time limitations in movies but xavier seems on the money re speed-friending. As for Old Spock, lets face it, how many times do people become friends with someone because their future self (from another universe) tells them what a great idea it would be?

It can be new and not as deep as it can become over the years, but like I said, Spock had been given a glimpse into a possible future for that friendship. It wasn't being said by Spock Prime just because it was a great idea, either. Spock Prime said it because he believed it was destined to happen. As long as they were together, it couldn't be any other way.

Couples who knew each other for less than a year get married and have long and happy marriages, too.

I've been a visiting professor at places where I formed friendships over nine months (a school year) that have lasted for years, since.

Is the friendship as deep and complete as it was in TWOK? No, of course not. But the idea that Spock didn't know Kirk long enough for it to make sense that he reacted as he did to his death is, no disrespect intended, rather cold and ridiculous, in my opinion.

I agree. I have one friend that I just met back in January for school work and am still close to them. Experience can accelerate different aspects of relationships. It may not be in the films, but in Countdown to Darkness Kirk describes their relationship as "evolving." It is clearly moving from one stage to another.

Another aspect is the part that, as many have said, it was the potential that was painful as well. Spock discovered that he had a friend in Kirk, only to face the loss so soon after the discovery.

Sorry, I don't think you just move on from that.

I don't see it as a problem. In fact I almost included that point myself. Also, McCoy did say he liked Spock.

And sure, we know the off screen reason for Kirk's comment, but it doesn't help in portraying them as friends.

You go on to make a case for shorter term friendships, which is puzzling as I didn't mentioned that issue one way or the other. I just don't see much evidence of friendship up to Kirk's comment, when they were being reassigned I believe, that: "We are so too friends dam-mit!" And Spock's reply of: "Huh?". I'm just guessing, but it doesn't seem like Old Spock's comments are exactly ringing in Spock's ears at that point. Kirk may have made a couple of overtures but Spock appeared largely oblivious much of the time.

Well, we do have the mourning of a friend, and the mourning of a captain. It could've been the reverse of "Amok Time", where Spock's display of emotion was explained by him as relief that Starfleet hadn't lost a highly proficient captain. If the friends angle doesn't work, maybe in STID, Spock was upset that Starfleet had lost such a highly proficient captain.
Of course, we know that in both cases, he was reacting to the fate of a friend. Rationalization is illogical, but so be it. Not even Spock's logic is perfect.

The point is, I don't think Spock ever called Kirk his friend in any episode of TOS. But of course they were. So even though Spock Prime said they'd have a memorable friendship, the younger Spock couldn't quite process that and eagerly let himself become close with yet another person in his life who could be very good for him (the other being Uhura), yet it seems to start happening in spite of that.
