SPOILERS!!! NEW AICN RUMORS (APRIL 30)

A complete lack of originality, quelle surprise. Another raid on classic Trek to make up for a lack of their own ideas, while managing to urinate copiously on the original. Even stupider is casting Cumberbatch, the whitest man ever. Fools.

Well, I'm extremely disappointed. They reboot the franchise by going into an alternate universe and now they are bringing back Kahn, just to feed this overrated obsession fans have with the character.

I WANT GEORGE AND GRACIE IN THE NEXT MOVIE

I would love to see Star Trek return to the 24th century post dominion War. That era was my Star Trek.

Are all those comic-book movie-adaptations completely lacking in originality too?
You don't know the story of this movie, only that it will (perhaps) have Khan in it. Where can you see a lack of originality with so little knowledge?

For me, they pretty much said after the first film that because this is an altered universe, they could do anything. To even consider bringing back Khan in the SECOND movie feels like a cop out simply because it's Khan.

I keep hearing the question referring to The Dark Knight and bringing in the Joker and the thing with that was that whole thing is reimagined. Abrams Star Trek has NOT reimagined, just kind of retooled to shut all the continuity pornographers (Best phrase Braga has ever used by the way) up.

If they can do anything, they can do Khan.
Khan hasn't been done in thirty years (poor guy).

This Khan will have very different motivations to the scenery-chewing, giant-chested revenge nut from "Wrath of Khan". My guess is that he'll have been with the Klingons for the past 25 years. There will be no Genesis device or Carol Marcus. The Khan/Kirk fight won't be personal about a dead wife and long exile, it'll simply be Augment genius vs. our genius level repeat offender with the fate of the galaxy at stake.

And it's gonna be FUN.

:techman:

Most here who complain about a "lack of originality" from the creative team around Abrams only show their own limited imagination as they obviously can't imagine a Khan-story outside the "Space Seed"/"TWoK"-borders.

Anybody thinks old Spock is becoming a Star Trek Kenobi. i really don't know why do they need him this time.

I just told my brother about the Khan thing. His response: "What? They couldn't find a blond guy? Haven't they seen 'Wrath of Khan?'":lol::lol:

The cast don't have to be the same ethnic backgrounds as their characters but they should at least look it.
Kirk and McCoy are meant to be white Americans, Scotty white Scottish, Uhura black African etc.
Says who? We've had remakes of other movies and television series where major character have changed ethnicity and gender. If this was recasting a character in the same continuity I might agree but the rule book is out the window with remakes, re-imagining concerned.

"To boldly go where others have gone before?"

700 Episodes and 11 movies....

Well, out of all the villains of the week on TOS, Khan is the most popular and recognizable. He was the one they brought back for a movie

I don't think that was the case at the time. Mudd was probably more recognizable because of the number of appearances. Star Trek wasn't really the kind of show that had this type of famous villain until the movies.

I was talking about today. Today Khan is the most recognizable villain of the week from TOS since he was the one they brought back for a movie, a movie that is still regarded as the best of the franchise.

We hope. I just hope Orci and the others looked the word "hubris" up in the dictionary before deciding to go down this path. This will require reinventing the character.

Arch villains like the Joker or Lex Luthor or Moriarty have the same backstories almost all the time they appear. Their motivations and such are the same almost all the time they appear. It can't be that way with Khan. That's the difference, here. This Khan will be different. He has to be. That could actually be good. Or not.

To that end, no, it won't be anything like TWOK or even "Space Seed". It will be different, and dare I say even original enough that it will have to judged on its own merits without comparison to TWOK. That would be the fair thing to do. Maybe it will be fun.

And now that the spoilers are flowing out, will there be carnivorous tribbles or not? What about that rumor?

About Cumberbatch's ethnicity: I wonder if that is part of Khan's disguise? We're seeing him as a white human Starfleet officer. Maybe we'll get a couple scenes where Cumberbatch is make-upped to look as Khan Noonien Singh is supposed to?

I hope not, for a variety of reasons:

-Why does one have to become white to be a Starfleet officer. Starfleet is suposed to be diverse, a human of any race shouldn't raise any eyebrows.

-If you're going to cast an actor and then apply make-up to make their skin a different colour, why not cast an actor of that skin colour?

-Khan did wear a Starfleet uniform in Space Seed. Likely he's wearing one in XII for the same reasons he did there.

Besides, I don't mind a white guy being Khan that much. It's skinny white guy as Khan I have a problem with. Cumberbatch is a great actor, but does anyone really look at him and think "genetically enhanced superman"?

Maybe they'll CGI his complexion. ;)

As has been said before on these boards, Khan's ethnicity has always been assumed, never confirmed. And even if he is Sikh, as was assumed in "Space Seed", that doesn't have to make him an Indian. It could be in the great game of Risk that was happening during the Eugenics Wars, this was simply the territory he seized because he had the opportunity to do it. There's always an explanation for things, after all. Ok, maybe rationalization. It's a fine line.

For what it's worth, as I remember it, the rest of his crew on the Botany Bay in "Space Seed" and TWOK were no more ethnically Indian than Montalban or Cumberbatch are. Wouldn't at least a few have been?

Oh, and that brings up the question of the rest of the crew of the Botany Bay in this movie. Is Khan a sole survivor this time?
