Revisiting ST-TNG...

Dumping on most of TNG in the TNG forum while excusing crap like Catspaw was always going to make you super popular.

I'm sure you knew that before you started. It doesn't take a genius to work it out.

Have you even read most of his reviews? I'm a far bigger TNG fan than Warped9 and I think he's been downright charitable to some of these episodes.

And how did I dump on the series? I actually liked episodes that many TNG fans had pretty much written off. I've liked a fair portion of it better than I remember even if there are still some episodes I still don't care for.

Or am I supposed to universally accept everything without question and meekly agree with the general consensus?

Doesn't seem like I'm the one dumping here.

I'm not a TNG fan, sparky.

I nonetheless make no apology for my awesomely controversial and cutting-edge opinion of Warped9's thread.

"Attached" ***

Picard and Crusher are taken prisoner by a paranoid group and are linked telepathically.

This wasn't great, but it was okay. I found the alien Kes and Prit to be comical in their paranoia. There was a degree of charm in Picard and Crusher sharing each other's thoughts unexpectedly. They finally bring the smoldering feelings between Crusher and Picard to the fore...and then turn away from it. And at least the story moved along.

"Force Of Nature" ****

Two scientists claim warp drive is damaging the fabric of space.

Star Trek meets Greenpeace. I waffled on this one. Ultimately I'll nudge it to good because they were trying to tell a meaningful story. But I feel the ending was just a little too pat, a little too final rather than more credibly open ended. I also have to say these forehead-of-the-week designs looked ridiculous---they had to have been able to come up with something better.

Still, the story moved along and never really got bogged down. I also identified to some extent with the female scientist because I know such people who come across as so impatient with most anyone who questions them no matter how rationally.

"Inheritance" ****

Data meets a woman who claims to be his mother.

Data meets his mommy? How appropriate to watch on Mother's Day. :) Okay at heart there's a fair story here and while I don't think it's as good as "The Offspring" it's still decent enough. I think it's a little slow to start, but for me it really picks up when Data begins to suspect this woman isn't who she claims to be...or believes herself to be. The resolution is an interesting bit of misdirection.

Not bad.

This story does add to what is actually a long visited idea in Trek all the way back to TOS' "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" and "Requiem For Methuselah" through TMP and then TNG's "Measure Of A Man," "The Schizoid Man," "The Offspring" and then "The Quality Of Life." Essentially what defines being alive, conscious and sentient. Julianna Soong is really very much like the android Roger Corby and it's really only the terminology used that's different. The other distinction is that Corby knew what he was and Julianna doesn't.

One idea that is apparent (except perhaps for TMP) is that machine intelligence seems to be recognized mostly when it's in human or humanoid form. Outside of that then not so much. Data had to fight to prove the exocomps in "The Quality Of Life" were valid lifeforms. And Kirk certainly had few if any qualms about destroying Landru ("Return Of The Archons") and Nomad ("The Changeling") even though they both appeared to be highly sophisticated AI's in their own right. Of course the term AI didn't exist in the '60s (not mainstream anyway) and so the term supercomputer was used, but it seems to have been intended to be pretty much the same thing. Or perhaps not...perhaps there is indeed a fine line between a highly sophisticated computer and genuine AI.

"Parallels" *****

Worf finds himself shifting across different realities.

I remember liking this and I still do. :techman: The changes for Worf begin subtly and then become increasingly divergent from the familiar. I think this was a pretty decent way to tell a story about different realities and without getting bogged down in alternate timelines and continuities largely because Worf is the one constant we can hang on to. The bit with the Enterprise from a reality dominated by the Borg was creepy. In some respects I wish this episode could have gone on a bit longer to explore more of the differences.

I'm not a TNG fan, sparky.

I nonetheless make no apology for my awesomely controversial and cutting-edge opinion of Warped9's thread.

Some pretty damn controversial stuff here. How dare he think such things about episodes of TNG. :p

Warped also seems to have "forgotten" all those times he's gone into the ENT forum and any ST09 threads to spread his "gospel" about how he never bursts into threads to ridicule people's opinions!!

Can't wait to hear his "review" of Spock's Brain.:techman:

Seems you "remember" things rather differently. I criticized ENT and ST09 whenever they were raised in General or TOS forum, but I've rarely ventured into the the ENT or ST09 forums. And I haven't done even that for ages.

But don't let reality interfere with your what you want to believe.

Your "open minded" reviews of the ENT series speaks for itself, as does every post where you take a swipe at ST09. If by "for ages" you mean several weeks, then I would agree. Otherwise, there are few here who wouldn't argue about your bias and open mindedness toward anything Trek post 1979, including TOS-R which you can't bring yourself to watch..

"Sub Rosa" *

Crusher becomes involved with her grandmother's lover.

I don't think it would matter how you describe this episode, it's still going to sound bad. And it is. Trek meets spooky Harlequin Romance novel.

This was excruciating. Can I just leave it at that?

It strikes this particular TNG fan - and moderator - that to date, Warped9's thread has gone pretty well, with a variety of reviews from him, some surprisingly positive, some remarkably negative. I have disagreed with a fair number of them substantially, but he has generally presented his opinions in this thread with civility, although quite naturally in a manner consistent with his particular (IMO narrow, but it's a personal choice) outlook on what Star Trek should be.

What I see across the last half a page or so is an importing into this thread - and subforum - of bad blood, doubtless rooted in some long-standing obscure interpersonal conflict originating in other parts of the board that I don't read. In fact, I've hardly seen a couple of the long-term posters criticising Warped9 in this forum before today, which I think speaks volumes of how much of their presence in the thread today is an interpersonal matter rather than an honest disagreement with the content of this long-running thread.

Coming specifically into a subforum/thread with the express intent of targetting the OP personally, rather than with a genuine desire to discuss the thread with good intent, is pretty much one definition of trolling and frankly, I could quite easily justify giving a couple of warnings out already and it's still an option if the thread doesn't settle back down.

But I'd really prefer to get the thread back on track, and hope you guys can just man-up, swallow your collective pride just a little and discuss things civilly, without the sniping.

Take the personal sniping to another part of the board, if you must carry it on somewhere, and give another mod a headache instead please! ;)

On a not-so-serious note, if anyone disagrees with Sub Rosa's one star rating, they're fucking getting warnings too.

On some level this reminds me somewhat of TOS' "Wolf In The Fold." In that a non corporeal entity has been murdering women for centuries usually by inhabiting a host body to commit the crimes, all in order to feed off his victims' fear and terror. Down through time it leapt from host to host to host and left Earth when man ventured out into the galaxy. In "Sub Rosa" this thing was surviving through a particular family in a somewhat analogous way only feeding off what? The victim's passions?

TOS' execution of this idea was entertaining. TNG's take on it was embarrassing and cringe inducing.

This is also the bloke who gave TOS' Catspaw three stars.
I seriously doubt there will be a low rating for any episode of TOS. He is less generous with TNG and doesn't seem to really get any of the other shows at all, but thinks B5 is brilliant. That should tell you plenty about his "critical" point of view.
And whenever you open you mouth it always affirms loads of what I've suspected about you.

Funny, you don't see me going into other folks' threads to badmouth them. But I guess you can't help yourself.

I make no damned apologies for what I like or don't like. It's my opinion which is something you've never been able to stomach. And I "get" the other shows just fine---but you consider it a personal failing that I don't suck up the same stuff you like. And just what will it take for you to get out of my face? Or perhaps you just can't help trolling other people's threads.

Now I know I'll probably get a warning for this post even though I was just minding my own business and everything was just peachy...until now.

Amazing. I've been trying to get your goat for 6 pages, and nothing. Nothing. You're the chillest guy in the world. Then this asshole sticks his nose in with three sentences, and bang, you've lost your temper. Wow. I'm in awe. I feel inadequate, actually. How did he manage that? It's really amazing.

Seriously... just two posts after a long one of mine requesting that everyone chill out so we get the thread back on track in order to avoid my needing to hand warnings out, you come along and call number6 an asshole?

Warning for Flaming.

I'm going to bed. PM me to complain if you must, but I'm not going to have a chance to read it until tomorrow evening at the earliest, and it's a pretty clear-cut flame so...

The rest of you, do try to play nicely in the meantime! Kiss Kiss.
