TBBS and treatment of women

What really illustrates the fact that these threads do nothing to change people's attitudes, is the number of people in Miss Chicken's thread who's first thought when offered a working Holodeck is to use it to fuck virtual replicas of actresses they think are hot.

Because there's nothing creepy or weird about making a replica of a real person so you can fuck it.

Even on DS9 they treated that as disturbing. I actually wrote a fanfic looking at the ethical implications of that, too. (No, it was NOT X-rated. A strong PG, at the most.)

That kind of objectification is a very likely outcome to the way our culture is going.

And yes, RJ--that IS a bad thing.

Perhaps the government can put something in the water to neuter people. That sounds like a world I'd want to live in.

Something's been bothering me lately...
OOOOOH thanks a whoooooole lot, Robert!!!

Another round of big fat stinky chalupa dropped right square in the laps of the Misc mo...

oh wait....

Really? Cuz I'd definitely do Brad Pitt

You jezebel.

Rincewiend once had an animated avatar of a lady's chests (so's not to offend YR) bouncing up and down, so his present one is completely anodyne. I think the board biscuit goes to TGT (who else) who had an animated avatar of another lady boucing up and down.

Yep, this one:

Nowadays i stick with pics of female celebs i find beatifull/sexy on a purely physical level, but that doesn't mean i only see them as lust-objects...
I just like good looking(eye of the beholder and all that) women, simple as that...

Might be fair to say that if ImageShack doesn't want the image, we probably shouldn't be allowing it either.

Is sleeping with a holographic representation of someone really that much different than masturbating to a picture, a blow-up doll with the person's image taped to it or just thinking about the person while masturbating?

Why should a physical representation of the person change things? It's NOT that person nor is the simulation even likely to be accurate. If some woman or some man wants to create a copy of me by whatever means and fuck it, more power to them. It doesn't harm me any so have at it.

So in my FRIENDS holodeck recreation when I take on the role of Ross would I be sleeping with the character Rachel Green or a holo-representation of Jennifer Aniston?

Are all of those supposed to be not creepy?

I can't say I'd be overly upset if some stranger was getting off to a picture of me - heck, probably not upset at all. I'd be flattered.

Just don't expect me to make your fantasies a reality and we'll be fine.

If you are under the impression women are objectified more in our culture as time goes on, I must completely disagree. Women have never been closer to true equality than they are now, and the situation gradually improves as time goes on. Sure, sometimes it's two steps forward, one step back, but the objectification of women has come a very long way in a relatively short time from when women essentially were objects, property of their parents until they became property of their husband.
There is still a good long way to go, but imho objectification of women is not worsening, quite the opposite.

Well, I'd feel creeped out, so ymmv.

That's not quite what I meant. One thing, there's a distinction between thinking about someone and putting a picture of them on a blowup doll to have sex. Second, I think if an individual has gone out of the way to emphasize their sexuality (I'm being a little vague here, an example would be someone in a porno shouldn't be shocked with what people do to their image), it's different from someone who hasn't.

I agree but from the opposite tack. I think it is a mistake to believe that men are not objectified. I think in many ways athleticism in men is the equivalent of beauty in women( for example compare male steroid use numbers to female eating disorder numbers). Even my girlfriend has stated that she believes construction work and day laboring is the male equivalent of prostitution,. Men are valued solely for the strength of their back and if that goes they are tossed aside.

Mmm, I'd say two out of three not creepy. Not a bad ratio. :rommie:

In reference to your comment above I am curious where you think the line should be drawn for creepy or not creepy. After all you certainly could say someone in Hustler shouldn't take offense, but some people would say magazines like FHM and Maxim are really just spank material featuring celebrities who are comfortable being sexy, but not naked. Would you say all celebrities in any context are fame game, because almost by definition they trade on their looks? Would you say the line is between a public figure on the one hand and a person you know or a stranger on the other? Not trying to challenge you I am just interested in your opinion.:bolian:
