... and as it moves on Janeway the character will not be generating profit. That's my point.

    Doesn't matter. The books will.

Ummm, which authors were writing "the 'angry fanboy' version of Janeway"?

If she returns from the dead in a leave-your-brain-at-the-door plot she's not profitable either.

Well, then I guess it a good thing that Pocket doesn't have to rely on just one character to make a profit. Besides, she can't have been that profitable in the first place or Pocket would have chosen someone else to kill. Now, I'm not saying that she was unpopular, it's just that if she really was as popular as you all seem to think, then there is no way they ever would have killed her in the first place.

You know Star Trek Online and it's tie-in books aka Needs of the Many and any other books that would be released under the Star Trek Online banner have Janeway as still alive maybe the Janeway fans should check those out.

Indeed. The Star Wars prequels put a coin or two in George Lucas' pocket.

I never knew the fictional death of a fictional character would be so inflammatory.

I wasn't active on the online Trek forums back when DS9 ended; was there a similar reaction among fans to DS9 books being published without Sisko? He was at least as important to DS9 as Janeway was to Voyager.

It was never all about one character. And they're getting quite a bit of mileage out of the SERIES, because they spun it in a new, interesting direction. It's not just a Janeway death sob story, they've added new characters to the crew, new ships to the Voyager fleet, and embarked on a new mission back to the Delta Quadrant.

Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many is a book that I am planning on buying. I choose to read this book this not because I am a Janeway fan, but because I am a Star Trek Fan (I planned on buying this even before I had found out that she was alive in that book). Not buying the books after Janeway was killed off was never an option to me. I will continue to be a Star Trek fan & read the books.

I may not agree with Admiral Janeway being killed off & I do want her to be brought back, but I am not going to stop being a Star Trek fan because she is not yet back.

Since Pocket Books has established that far in the future timeline present within their Star Trek book series that Janeway is alive again they now will need to write her back to life in their Star Trek book series in order to not conflict with what that they have established regarding her being alive in the future.

Actually, that's not true; Janeway is alive in the far future in Star Trek: Online and the Shatner novels, but neither of those is in the same continuity as Destiny and its aftermath. (The Road to 2409 timeline clearly doesn't include Destiny, and contradicts several aspects of the DS9 relaunch as well.)

Star Trek: Online is a totally separate interpretation of the Trek universe, not bound or connected to anything the novels do, and vice versa.

I don't remember Sisko's absence in the early days of the DS9R to have caused any major ardor for his character's return.

I was too busy enjoying DS9's elaborate tapestry and being thankful to have it back.

Maybe if Janeway had been removed onscreen, like Sisko, and Data were, it would of been easier for non-regular readers to accept.

The problem seems to be, that generally there are two major camps.

Regular Readers who follow the books as a continuing and dynamic universe for their current Trek Fix

    and

Non-Regular Readers, who like to remember the shows they loved every once and awhile by picking up an adventure that doesn't deviate too far from the way things were back then their show in question was on the air.

I tend to fall into the Regular Reader camp, and I like the fact that the universe changes and evolves. It keeps things unexpected.

The fact that a character can die and remain dead, that death is significant, and has repercussions... That's major.

The idea that the characters we love can actually be put in danger and we're not sure they'll always get out of it, has merit.

    let's break down simply:

    131 people want Janeway back.

the novels where Janeway's dead have sold several thousand copies.

who do you think Pocket are going to pay more attention to? 131 screaming fans on the net who aren't buying jack or several thousand people putting money in their coffers?

In a vaguely similar vein to the Janeway-is-alive-in-another-universe thing, Star Trek XI killed the crews of six starships, Amanda, six billion Vulcans and at least that many Romulans.

We know George Kirk, Amanda and Vulcan (and presumably the crews of those six ships) lived on in Prime Trek. Did it take away fron their deaths any? Were their deaths any less felt? IMO, no.

Romulus Prime died, yet we know the alternate Romulus has at least 129 years left. With foreknowledge of the disaster, things may turn out differently this time. Yet people have already threatened to stop reading the books when 2387-Prime rolls around and Romulus meets it's destiny. The "it's still there in alternate 2258" argument doesn't work.

Many threads crop up begging for a "reset button" to "fix" the STXI timeline to TOS in order to save Vulcan and undo Nero's damage

Thus the "Janeway lives in alternate book timelines" argument doesn't work.

(yes this contradicts what I said pages ago. I've had time to think about it)

For the fans who like the stories to be as believable as possible, they'd be upset to suddenly have a hokey resurrection thrust upon them. You don't usually see a book series take a major change in direction unless they weren't selling well enough.

Well, there were certainly some very accusing posts about the time of DS9 and VOY ending that Pocket Books should "grow some balls" at last and stop pressing "the old reset button". The fiction killed off Shakaar, and yet people said he wasn't one of the regulars and it didn't count.

But you can't please everyone. People were worried either Picard or Crusher would be killed off in "Death in Winter", and Margaret Clark teased that the book would be about endings and new beginnings, and even the cover art was ominous, with its grim-faced Picard and silhouette of Beverly.

But it was obvious that any death of any regular would be inflammatory for someone. So there was no way the decision to finally kill off a character would be approved of by everyone. In the end, the death had to be the one that offered the most new story opportunities for the remaining regulars.

I have to vote for keeping her dead - not because I didn't like her character but because it helps develop the stories of Voyager and the other Voyager characters.

Why can't we see who votes what? I thought that was a function of the new polls?

In my stunning naiveity I thought "why the need for a public poll? It's a TV show character. Nobody would care about Janeway enough to spam this little poll of mine."

I really didn't know there were people quite so obsessed with Janeway until a few weeks ago

And I learned the hard way that many people seem to hesitate to vote at all when the identities are public. I used the "public" option in my last IDW comics poll, and it had hundreds and hundreds of lookers and yet only a handful of voters - even weeks later.

At closing: 49 voters and 1,228 lookers.

I suppose 49 isn't too bad, but it took a long time to get there.
