Series 5 trailer

Hasn't the coat stand always been there? I could have sworn it was by the door in Eccleston's Tardis at least.

"It seems a curiously British idea to make the lead character in a prime time TV show look purposely and perversely less attractive than they actually are," says Mr Groves.

"I can't think of anyone that would look at this image and then decide they would want to stick it on their bedroom wall."

Yeah, really. He nailed it.

People are really setting themselves up for a fall with this Moffat worship. There are still going to be poor episodes next year and with six scripts to write and a show to run I can tell you now there'll even be a poor Moffat script in there.
I agree that some are, but the point of the ";)" at the end is to show I was deliberately laying it on thick. But that's not to say I don't agree with Allyn in trusting Moffat on this regard.

Some people are setting themselves up for a fall yes, not me. I fully expect Moffat to have a hit/miss ration similar to RTDs if I'm honest, but like RTD I suspect even his duff scripts will have some redeeming features.

But at the end of the day I've been a fan of the guy long before Who even came back, so I am looking forward to it. I don't expect it to be 100% brilliant all the time though...some people really do though!
Agreed. I'm sure he'll stumble a bit, no one is perfect. I was also a fan of Moffat before Doctor Who's triumphant returning. I'm still hoping Jack Davenport or Gina Bellman will show up...

I know that the coat stand was there when Ten regenerated because when he put his coat down when he re-entered the TARDIS right before, I thought, "Why toss your coat onto the railing when you've got that convenient coat rack right there?" :)

Yes but he's Doctor Who not the lead in Twilight

Sorry, but five years of NuWho is what this Doctor has to live up to and hopefully build upon in terms of style and success - not the videotape version. The last two guys were hip and sexy. Nothing less will do.

The BBC probably does better with international sales and marketing efforts on nuWho than with anything else they've got going. That matters a lot.

The writing is the one thing I have high hopes for. If one evaluates the overall quality of the storytelling on a TV series based on the premise that there should never - or even very rarely - be stories that fail on any number of levels then one has to eliminate virtually every very good, innovative TV series...ever.

People who work to exceed their best often fail, and often succeed - the only safe, dependable level of performance is mediocrity.

"The Wire" has been brought up to me in another context as the exception to this rule. Not having seen the entire series, I guess it's possible.

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't say either Eccleston or Tennant were classic leading man material. Ok both have a lot of fans but, be honest, Eccleston is a touch cumugenly looking (in the nicest possible way) and I know a lot of women whose view of Tennant is very similar to Donna's, ie he's a long streak of nothing. I have no doubt that to a significant number of people Smith will be hip and sexy, although given that a large part of Who's market are 8 year olds you have to wonder why that matters so very much! (I know he's there for the mums, and some dads, in the same way Amy will be there for dads and some mums!)

And looks don't mean everything. Freema is clearly the hottest of the companions to look at, yet also the blandest into the bargain, whilst the almost middle aged redhead was the most interesting of the companions (to me and a lot of people anyway.) Widening this out look at TNG, Frakes is obviously supposed to be the sexy leading man but how many women ignored him in favour of the shorter/older/bald guy (not WillsBabe obviously!)

Again I ask, how would you have dressed Smith? And more to the point who would you have prefered (because you've made it quite clear you don't like MS...eh I mean Matt Smith there!)

Neither would I, and that's not what I said. :)

Neither of those are my jobs. I'm not a five-star chef either, but I can tell the difference between a good meal and a Big Mac and needn't pretend otherwise just because I can't cook.

Okay, Dennis, say something nice: I like the boots.

Neither of RTD's Doctors looked goofy or had goofy costumes. Hell, Tennant was damned trendy.

Exactly. The two of them were definitely cool - Matt Smith's Doctor is deliberately costumed as a dork.

I actually like the idea of the Doctor looking like a dork again. As much as I loved Tennant, it always kind of seemed wrong how he was always the coolest-looking guy in the room. Part of the charm of the old shows is how completely strange and out-of-place the Doctor always seemed to look. It really helped to emphasize his "alien-ness."

That said, I do think Smith's costume could use a little more... flash somehow. I like the general concept, but the colors are just too dull and boring.

And I loathe it for the same reasons. I liked some of the old video version of DW, but generally find it far from "charming."

Well, if this doesn't work out from the BBC's POV a lot of the specifics, at any rate, will be short-lived. They've been through at least one misstep in the Tennant years that was corrected pretty quickly.

While I don't think the show will decrease in popularity because of Matt Smith's look, it would be easy to make changes to it if it doesn't fully work. There were slight changes to Ten's hair and costume, after all.

Me, personally, I always thought it was kind of silly that the Doctor always wears basically the same, no matter where he goes. I just don't believe Ten wouldn't have caused some uproar in Pompeji dressed like that, the same goes for Martha in 'The Shakespeare Code' - a woman in trousers, that was unthinkable back then.

"Video version"? Anyone would think the last four series were filmed rather than shot on Digibeta.

Yeah I find the video version rather a quaint description since I have even Hartnell on DVD.

Denis, what is this misstep from the Tennant years?

Count Zero, the whole point surely is that the Doctor doesn't really fit with any time, he's supposed to look out of place but, Midnight aside, the very force of his personality wins through. Like he told Martha, just act like you own the place and you'll look fine

That's never bothered me. This isn't a hardcore scifi show that requires strict believability. It's a fun fantasy/adventure show.

Plus it's kinda fun watching The Doctor stroll around some ancient, medieval city in a modern suit, converse, and spikey hair. lol

Moffat is a fan of the second Doctor and to me it looks like Matt Smith's outfit is rather similar to Troughton's outfit.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/gallery/seconddoctor/troughton09.shtml

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Troughton's costume was even sillier than Smith's and the two costumes are only vaguely similar. It wouldn't matter if they were identical, though, as Troughton isn't staring in a 2010 BBC series.

The problem isn't that I don't like the costume- I actually have no problem with an eccentric alien time traveler wearing a goofy costume- my concern is if the casual fans will accept the Doctor suddenly looking like a giant dork. RTD was absolutely right to lose the ridiculous wardrobe and give the Doctor some stylish threads. The show loses nothing by putting the Doctor in contemporary clothes- I think most people would agree that quite a few of the old costumes were horrible. It gains quite a bit of accessibility, though, by giving the Doctor clothes that aren't chortle-inducing.
